SocialEngine Blog

SocialEngine is the best way to create a unique community website. Let your friends, fans or customers geek out about anything you want.

Future Features

Now that v4.1.1 is out the door, we’d like to share a glimpse of what’s to come. We are planning to release v4.1.2 on February 16th. This release will primarily consist of bug fixes and very minor feature additions. Over the next few months, we will be working on the following major features:

Better Mobile Compatibility: We are working to make SocialEngine 100% compatible with all mobile browsers. We are also looking into creating a simplified mobile theme for better usablity on smartphone devices.

Performance/Optimization: We are researching ways to optimize SocialEngine’s speed and performance.

Layout: We plan to make dramatic improvements to the Layout Manager to make it easier to use and more extensible. We will also be re-thinking a few of the plugin pages to improve the usability and consistency across plugins.

We hope this information will help give developers an idea of our roadmap so that we don’t step on each others’ toes. Please feel free to post any questions!

I would love to see some of the things that were included in 3.2, especially being able to re order images in a album (drag and drop should be a must) and the status of quota file size limit remaining just above the image upload box like in 3.2. Keep up the good work, behind you guys all the way. Very happy customer so far.

If I can make a suggestion – please look at improving the "member" functionality.
Like on the back end or layout editor where there are options for different looks to the member page, and how many members are displayed on each page, and the ability on the back end to add a profile field or two to display on the front end by the name on the members page.
(that would be good on any page where one profile field could be enabled to display by the name, i.e career field)
Also more versatile member page, better looking, better search function (as of now only one category can be searched at a time)
Thank you for your nice social software.

@Charlotte … Great news! Regarding item 3 (i.e. Layout) please add drop-down menus as a core function (similar to the drop-down menus in the admin's backend) with integration of the mini-menu. Additionally, a customizable page-specific search function (widget) would be essential. BR, Peer

    Please add:
    1. Cancel Button (when starting an email but you don't have time to finish it, I want to click, cancle).

    2. Option to not show your friends feeds. (for those that get chatty)

    3. If you post on your own profile, we don't need to have a message telling us we did that.

    4. Photo (a must), we need to be able to rotate and do other types of edits.

    5. This is for 3 Party developers- Please create a way for the user to use a webcam for short video messages to friends..yes, like the "book" does.

    6. A way to know our users IP's and other info.

    7. Last for now, A way for the user to disable only their profile (not delete)

    8. Built in SE created plugin for "Pages" and "Fans" or "Business Pages".

    9. Improve "Groups"

I think one way to improve performance is to "unify" notifications when someone posted on an activity you have both liked and commented on.

Currently the notifications can get redundant:
"User A has commented on a post you commented on" and "User A has commented on a post you liked" where the post is something that has been both commented and liked by the user – it could simply just show "User A has commented on User B's post" Or "User B has commented on his/her post"

Likeable comments would also be a good option.

I suggest on the layout to add more column options, like a 2-column layout with a wider sidebar that can accomodate 300×250 ad banners and such.

More options would mean more savings for us who cant afford third party solutions

Please consider adding support for more than just GD2 , ImageShak and others features would be nice as Users like to have a nice variety when making profile pictures or uploading other photos. I think the freedom of choice in that category would be very nice. Animated gif's are still very popular avatars.

Also For the Member home page it seems any videos/music does not play on any browser other than IE, chrome, safari and ff all have to access the page they're on to use them.

As for Images, tagging seems to be an issue as well as the names show up but you cannot click them to select when typing. Just some fixes I'd love to see.

We need better search capabilities…. The search on the site now is very poor.. Can we please have search that will make suggestions (with thumbnails) while typing. This is a major concern.

It is extremely difficult for members to search for for other members and to find content. unless you know exactly what you are looking for down to the T, you can not find anything.

Please please please please…. we are desperate for better search capabilities. Hope you guys implement that in the next update..

    ok… one more please. Please

PLEASE integrate the Forums into the Wall. They're totally useless if they don't post to the wall (new topics AND replies to topics… with the option to turn the wall notifications of replies on or off, depending on how busy things get).

Also, please fix (or re-do) the notifications so we don't continue to get multiple notifications for the same thing. We should just get one notification until we check it – then another notification after that until we check it again. These multiple notifications are really hurting the site! It's a real annoyance to people and makes them less likely to come back.

Thanks! You have an awesome product… just a few annoying bugs!

Loving SE but I do have some suggestions:

    * Layout Manager – option to edit the layout of the pages; blogs, forum, classifieds.
    * Feed Item Filtering – there is no option for the member to filter even though this option is given in the admin.
    * 'Search' field for plugin pages – it is not possible to search with criteria in the search fields as there are none. The member page does have search field criteria for example (but you can't search ID's).
    * Option for picture requirement for profiles, events and groups.
    * Super Admin: Ability to moderate groups and have the same privileges as the group owner (Super Admin can't delete or edit group discussions, delete members or send group messages)
    * Email Templates – add 'object_description' to more templates.
    * Email All Members – Option to send out message to sub-networks.
    * Ad Campains – 'Edit Ad Campaign' – drag and drop option for the advertisments in the 'manage advertisments'. My banners rotate but I don't want to have the same banner visible twice. So I have created a scheme so that a banner is only visible once but I have to rebuild all my advertisments in 1 ad space when there is a change in advertisers. A drag and drop option would fix this time consuming issue.
    * Email All Members & Announcements – add a WYSIWYG editor.
    * Allow Profile Style – styling function so that group and event owners can style there groups/events without having CSS knowledge. No one in my community knows how to do this so this function is useless.
    * Group Posting Options – when you select 'members' (=group members) there should be a message on the front end that members need to join the group in order to post.

    Front End:
    * Member Page – 'next' and 'previous' button so you can browse back and forth.
    * Browse Events and Groups page – add 'search' field (is now only available on the 'my events' or 'my groups' tab)
    * Events – option to switch of rsvp option
    * Events – only list the number of attending event members in the guest tab (not the total number of attending, not attending, maybe attending)
    * Events – 'maybe attendings' should also be included in messages sent out to the event participants.
    * Groups – officers should also be able to send out group messages.
    * Improved Search function, with auto suggestion.
    * Albums – option to move photo's to other albums.
    * Forum – when adding multiple categories they will be listed in tabs instead of being a long list.
    * Messages – Super Admin: should be able to send out messages via inbox to all members and not have to be friends.
    * Follow function for groups and events – notification for group and event activity (new content and new members)
    * My events and groups are private (only visible to registered users) but visible to the public (in the admin). This results in only the group/event profile picture and title to be visible to the public. It would be great to have a lang var option which says that the content is private.

    * Forum – there is a huge issue with adding links in the forum discussions, website links/url's do not work.
    * Forum – huge spaces are created when typing messages using hard enters.

I would absolutely love to see an improvement to the blog plugin. Having a look that makes it look more like WordPress would be good. The ability to choose from a few different themes as a user would be awesome. Within these themes, the admin should be able to set the header pictures to match the theme of the site. For instance, if it is a site about cars, then you could add different car themes to the headers within the pre-set themes. Also, instead of just seeing multiple entries when looking through blog posts, it would be cool if a user could give their own blog a name that way you could look up that "blog" and see all of thier entries. It would give the user more of a sense of individuality with their blogs. The themes would not have to be complex, but just enough to give a user more of a sense that it is "their" blog even though it is within the main site.

Great … thanks for the improvement guyz …

Mobile compability is the main concern…my site won't go anywhere with prevoius version features…too heavy and big for mobile devices…can't wait for your mobile compability …

I miss the feature you guyz had in SE3, It's a separated tabs for All Members/Friends, and Network Activities can be displayed at once, at least you can released a widget for that, or teach us how to make one

I think that's all guyz….i just need that features beside stability and security….

By the way when you said you'd like to share a glimpse of what's to come in 4.1.2 – you were serious! That really was just a glimpse. Could you give us a little more detail? It's really good if we can know what's actually coming so we can plan and schedule whether we think we need it and how soon we might need it. Thanks!

P.S. I'm still trying to figure out what was changed in 4.1.1. Everyone says the site seems a lot faster! So that's great! But I don't even know if that was something that was worked on in this version. And it would definitely help to know what else was changed.

    @Mario M.
I agree with you! Better search is critical. We also need tabbed search results like SE3. This doesn't seem like too hard of a feature to add as the individual search results already show what type of result it is. Just group them into ajax powered tabs and it would be perfect!

  23. Posted January 28, 2011 at 9:31 pm | Permalink

We really need the update in search capabilities. The link on profile (text with link) are not having any link on the profile and no searching for the text on the profile (it was very nice in SE3). Please fix that in search capabilities.

On member search page, please include the other fields for members (in results window) .. configurable from admin section. Like show the musician (or other field for profile type selected by admin) beside name. As such a simple name give little information and limit the search capability.

In events plugin.. please make it atleast what it was in SE3 (additional fields for different categories, large text for the description).

I think there were a lot of features (especially search) that were much better in v3 and are very important both for administration and for members.

Performance is much slower in v4 and that is even after I upgraded from shared hosting to a vps.

Being able to run our ad campaigns in the unused space to the left and right was very helpful in v3. Now ads take up content space.

Events functionality needs improvement such as a separate searchable location field and the ability to customize the character length for the event description. Ultimately I hope that SE can replace my users need to still post their events on FB, eventbrite, or meetup.

Linking to Twitter AND Facebook would be awesome and would be a great selling point for SE to have that built in functionality.

You guys should really work on some sorely needed core features that are still needed like: a) implementing proximity functionality b) an ad system that can target ads by any profile field and a self-service ad ordering system for larger sites c) restricting people from entering numbers as profile names if it doesn't work in the first place d) allowing the admin to set up a limited number of characters for a first-name/last-names for sites that dont want people entering initials. This would be a huge leap to an already amazing program. Thanks for everything you do (love the mobile thinking!)

  33. Posted January 31, 2011 at 2:32 am | Permalink

You should think about making location a global element so that all widgets can use that location and localize the content according to that, e.g. the weather plugin I need to serve localized content base on the ip addresses location, I can plug in my own ip – location database.e.g. ip2location or ipligence etc.

I'm not sure if this has ben mentioned in these many comments but…

I am looking to buy this software. I've been waiting for the billing side of things to come of age. I think it would be great if developers and plugins could tie in with the payment system.

The site i want to develop would limit certain plugins and custom pages – Once paid, they get access.

I'm not sure the software is developed for me quite right at the moment. But it is fantastic! However, I don't want to do too much custom development to the software for fear of later messing things up for updates.

    Carry on the great work!

4.1.1 appears to be great if you're running a clean install – but I think the next activity should really be to focus on the upgrade scripts and perhaps most importantly the Migration functionality.

There's a lot of bad press on the forums for older 3x and 4x installation unsuccessfully migrating/upgrading to 4.1.1. Please invest in these areas – some of your existing client base aren't happy at the moment.

Aside from that, when you do switch to new development, performance improvements and mobile are a must. With mobile, the ability to quickly post to groups, forums, walls and polls are a must. If you were thinking of going the app route – I, for one, would be willing to purchase an app if it allowed the above!

  41. Posted February 1, 2011 at 10:30 am | Permalink

In addition to my previous post, I would also like to emphasize on comments that made by Roary W. about the Ad Serving process:
Please provide the following feature for ads, if possible:
    1. Advertisers self service option for placing ad like facebook with payment option. any one can created ad and make online payment for their ad as like facebook allow their members
    2. if possible , allow member to register as publishers also like google adsence or like ad server
    3. Member will able to request cheque for earning from their publication..
    4. integration of Click froud detection.
These feature will give very good option for SE user to monetize their site.

We are waiting this feature and appreciate for all your effort to make this happen.

I agree on mobile being a must! All major social networks have it. But in the same thought lets not forget what makes these mobile sites really attractive to the end user. Please implement, Instant Messaging & Mobile Chat Room so members can IM each other and also chat in a Mobile based chat room on the go. Also I suggest that SE makes shell apps for Android & iPhone market for SE owners and charge it as a plugin and offer customization for us SE owners. You would make much more money and make us SE owner happy, which I know about 85% of SE owners would purchase this immediately. Because at the end of the day, the end user on our site is asking us do we have a app like facebook, or myspace.

Would you recommend I should wait for the new release who's to come in this "next few months" or go for it ?

I plan on buying the script at the end of march, will the new release be done by then ?

I am looking forward to your answers.

@Aidan – The upgrades I referred to in the blog will be free, so there's no benefit to waiting. We can help you perform upgrades as they come along. The entry posted above was primarily to give everyone an idea of the direction we're headed, rather than be a specific roadmap with explicit dates of release. These updates may trickle out of the course of several upgrades or they may all be included in a single one, depending on when they are completed.

  50. Posted February 4, 2011 at 6:22 pm | Permalink

I am very pleased with most of the script. It is put together very well and I can work with it with ease. I am wondering if you can add a few features.

If the campaigns could be setup so the members set them up on their side and website owner just has okay or deny the ad. Plus, give the site owner the choice of whether they want to charge or keep it free and same way with classifieds.

Do you know if you will be adding a store? Most social network scripts are equipped with them.

The other thing is wall-to-wall if you do not have it. I am just setting up site and I have not seen the question about the being able to post to friends walls.

I am using Boonex on other sites and am thinking of changing. This script so much easier to manage and very pleasing to the eye. I also love the price, as it is reasonable and there is no socialengine links to remove.

    Hi just purchased SE4

My immediate concern is the Create Event form

Grossly inadequate – can't believe by version 4 it's so primitive. Isn't event what SE is all about?

Some suggestions – AS A MINIMUM.

Event description box is way way too small.

Need to make 'maybe' optional. I don't need it and most event hosts fund it a nuisancce.

Also – the event end time is unnecessary. Events end when they end. Just make end time an option for those who might want to see it.

Event description is way too small.

Also an HTML editor to enhance event listings.

Event Address needs to be clearer.

There needs to be an option to limit to event attendees

There needs to be a limit to number of people one person can invite.

There needs to be a 'turn-off' date/time for event RSVPs.

I've searched, but can't find one. Is there a Plug-in for what I've suggested above?

    Does anyone have a suggestion?

The biggest most glaring problem that I really hate is the failure of the program to respect line breaks and spacing. Any idea when you guys will get around to fixing this?

The second most annying feature to me is the blogs plugin. Yes, you guys are using tinyMCE, which is an awesome editor, BUT you have removed some of the best buttons from MCE. I really wish that you had included a "browse" feature to allow me to upload a local picture file to the blog.

The migration script is very buggy and needs immediate attention. Cannot switch to SE 4 any version without it. Thanks!

Before SE4 should GO in any other direction, they MUST reflect back on the basic things that's been annoying us.

1.) I'm fine with receiving redundant notifications about users commenting on my post, commenting on a post I commented on, and commenting on a post i liked, I don't mind that because I already modified the notificationscontroller.php to MARK ALL SIMILAR notifications as READ when I click on any of the similar updates. SocialEngine should have solved this one first because it is very annoying to click each and every notification just to get rid of these updates. Even though the modification is a clumsy one that compares the user_id and object_id and marks the similar notifications as READ=1, but at least it works.

I don't know if Alex, Charlotte, John, Jung, Stephen, Bryan, Shaun and Mara owns an SE4 website –> if they did then they must have already noticed this. How on earth could you guys tolerate such annoying updates wherein you have to click EACH AND EVERY ENTRY, no matter if they are related to the same post or not, just to get rid of all notifications in the drop down list?

2.) Whenever we have already clicked/read one update from the pulldown, that particular entry should be hidden already or deleted from the drop down list. Again, I managed to find a tutorial to do this thing with some additional codes to the notifications.php and notificationscontroller.php so that we can no longer see the entries in the pulldown those that we have read already. The current default is that SE just changes that entry from bold to regular font. That must be deleted from the list as well. It's ok if that is still in the main activity notifications page but that should be deleted from the pulldown list.

I appreciate future features, but please remove these little nuisances first before we go another step further.

1st Question: When You post a New Video or a New Photo on 'What's New', no sharing options are defined, so the system gives privacy restrictions to the lowest level; it means that the posts of the user are seen by every users. Is that a bug or bad settings?
2nd Question: During user registration, privacy levels are set automatically, so no manual choice is possible.
3rd Question: Photo Covers on 'My Albums' are seen by every user even though i shared them with my friends only

Subscription Functions: Would love to see a free trial option so that it's free for a week or a month and then the user's paypal is charged to continue without having to redo everything because their subscription is cancelled.Any plans for this?
