@Rachel The upgrade will be available to download free of charge from the client login area. If you'd like our technicians to perform the upgrade for you, we offer an upgrade service for $60. If you prefer to do the upgrade yourself, there is a tutorial here that you may find helpful: We recommend taking a backup before performing an upgrade.

Sounds good. CDN and Twitter/Facebook Integration sound like a winner. Maybe worth the $60 to let your company do the Upgrade. We still have a few issues with 4.1.5 – this could be best solution before we launch our first site. Looking forward to it.

Is this upgrade development still in progress? If not why not post the change log here so at least we can plan in advance if it's worth upgrading at this juncture?

I certainly hope they fix the missing icons/functions to attach link, video, photo, music etc when one composes or reply to a message using IE. Safari, FF and Chrome are showing up ok. Also, clicking on a first or last name as displayed in a member's profile returned all site members instead of the same members

Josh from Social Engine Mods has already created Social DNA with Openid that connects ALL major social networks to our platform.

Why are you guys doing something that has already been done AGAIN when we can't even search events *by location* on a social NETWORKING community? Priorities? (Location = Networking)

Looking forward to CDN support, will help with the speed issues. I would love to see the ability to change some of the core pages in the lay-out editor – Groups, Forums, Albums, Messages all cannot be changed with lay-out editor. Groups Profiles can be changed with lay-out editor.

  24. Khaled
    Posted June 20, 2011 at 8:01 pm | Permalink

I sent the following information to webligo sometime in March and never got a reply. Here is what I feel webligo should be concentrating on.

I have been doing some testing on SE4 with emphasis on load handling. When I purchased SE3 initially I enquired if it could handle large loads and was assured that it could. My tests then showed that it couldn't considering that I was looking to deploy the software on a site that already attracted over 500,000 users per day. SE4 was meant to solve this issue but my recent tests again prove that it will fail quite badly unfortunately.

There are a myriad of things that NEED to be optimized; for example:
On every load a logged in user is marked as "online" – this is totally unnecessary. On my legacy software which is quite a number of years old we initially did this too but soon switched to marking users as online every 5 minutes thus reducing the need for a query from once every load to once every 5 minutes.

Another issue, and this one is quite puzzling, is that on the home page (using a stock SE4 install with albums, videos, forums, blogs, events and groups plugins installed) there are over 40 db queries executed. A large proprtion of these 40+ queries are not cached even with caching enabled. Many of these queries are general for each page so they should and can be quite easily cached.

There are also looped queries being made, for example, on the page that lists the members on the site. For each member displayed a new query is executed. This is, in my humble opinion, bad practice and again, something that can quite easily be optimized.

My testing was conducted on two different platforms
    – a dedicated server
    – cloud environment

Neither produced results that would make me confident of deploying SE4 in a live environment. I will do some more benchmarking and testing and will also try SE4 using a percona DB but I don't think any of that will matter because I strongly feel that that software requires some extreme optimization. My initial thought was creating a module (let's call it OPMod) that would override the slow queries and the slow parts of the code so I wouldn't need to change and optimize each module separately. This will however make updates quite difficult.

I am hoping that this email will help your team focus on what is important for anyone looking to use SE4 as a viable solution for a healthy social network.

Not sure if my last message will make it to this blog entry but this is probably something that would be of interest to lots of people running SE on a virtual host.

Stats for this page: (as non-logged user) (this is a BLANK page with the default terms as when SE4 is first installed)

    Memory (start) : 259MB
    Memory (end) : 260MB
    Memory (difference) : 1016KB
    Memory (start) : 0.62MB
    Memory (end) : 14.60MB
    Memory (difference) : 14316KB
Memory increased at end : 14316KB
    Time taken: 0.5724s
Executed 30 queries in 0.019405364990234 seconds
    Average query length: 0.00064684549967448 seconds
    Queries per second: 1545.964222528
    Longest query length: 0.0057661533355713
    Longest query: UPDATE `engine4_user_online` SET `active` = ? WHERE (user_id = 0) AND (ip = 1483268301)

Okay, disregard the first part of these metrics as this is simply the apache process. What is of utmost interest here is the second part; the memory stats. This basically means that all the files that SE requires to work when loaded take up approx. 14M
and the queries, for the most part, are done to the settings table (every module makes it very own queries) in order to put together the configuration. This CAN and SHOULD be optimised. No wonder there are so many people complaining that a small number of users are causing their dedicated boxes to grind to a halt; you're literally running out of RAM!!

Please note the only reason I am posting this here is because my initial email from March, to webligo, highlighting these issues went unanswered. I see work being done on stuff that should not take priority over the optimization of the code as stated in my comments.

    @faouzi Thanks for the suggestion!
@Wes: CDN support basically allows you to use Amazon services for storing files rather than your own server, which can reduce the number of requests made to Apache on your dedicated server.
@Robinson: I believe there was an issue with the IM screen format. It looks like you had already opened a ticket regarding this issue. Please reply to the ticket if you have further questions.
@Rony: Please contact the developer of the third-party plugin you purchased to ask about compatibility issues.

@Mara The changing icons within forum categories is not good enough when trying to compete with forum software like SMF, phpBB and vBulletin.

People expect to have a single page they can view ALL unread posts in the forum. If we have a forum with 10 categories or more, forcing members to click through each section individually to see new threads is off-putting and kills our engagement and interaction.

Help us to build our communities by offering such a simple, yet crucial feature in an upcoming release.

@Khaled: Thanks very much for your message, and I sincerely apologise that you did not receive a reply. I have checked all of the past emails from that time and could not find an email from you, so we must not have received it. I have passed all of your suggestions along to our programmers so that we may keep them in mind when developing for future versions. We definitely appreciate your input!

The performance bottleneck is not being caused by MYSQL but is a result of PHP. To increase performance of PHP we recommend installing APC on the server (as long as you are not running suPHP). APC caches the PHP files in their compiled state, so it offers significant performance improvements. In addition, as a site grows (500,000 users) more resources are required to run the site efficiently; first we reccomend using a dedicated server and then multiple servers. A virtual host is a hosting account which is essential sharing the same server with multiple websites.

Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any other questions.

As a SE4 user, I thank Khaled for testing & suggesting the issues.
Even as a non technical guy I feel his suggestions are important & can be prioritize.

1] Marking users as 'online' every 5 min instead at every load.
2] Caching the 40+ queries which are not being cached.
3] Improving looped queries. example – while listing the members.

I love SE4 but the greatest drawback has been SPEED !
Adding more features won't matter much if SE crawls when there are like 30 users online on a quadcore dedicated server. I have 2 suggestions for Webligo relating to SE4

    1. Reduce & optimize DB queries
    2. Minify and combine all (or as many as possible ) JS & CSS to one (or as few as possible)

The only one problem for socialengine is performence. I have dedicated server with 32GB RAM but socialengine still slow when i have multiple users. I was install APC and GZIP but don change a lot performance.

Please minify JS and CSS and put all Js into one reduce http requests.

    @Khaled and SE

We really do believe that Social Engine is one of the best core platforms to have for building a dynamic Social Network. Since February, we have invested many resources to build our SN. (to go public very soon) –

However the issues with stability, loading times, and optimization, I agree is crucial to running a stable web and mobile site. As we are running our comparison analysis in our research , I just wanted to share with your team(s) to look into how the KING OF SOCIAL NETWORKS build, maintains, and optimize theirs. Of course we won't have multiple Gigantic servers, but maybe we can utilize certain "scripts?" – Thanks!

    Facebook, Technology

Facebook is one of the most-trafficked sites in the world and has had to build infrastructure to support this rapid growth. The company is the largest user in the world of memcached, an open source caching system, and has one of the largest MySQL database clusters anywhere. The site is largely written in PHP though the engineering team developed a way to programmatically transform PHP source code into C++ to gain performance benefits. Facebook has built a lightweight but powerful multi-language RPC framework that seamlessly and easily ties together infrastructure services written in any language, running on any platform. The company has created a custom-built search engine serving millions of queries a day, completely distributed and entirely in-memory, with real-time updates. Facebook relies heavily on open source software and releases large pieces of its own software infrastructure as open source. See and

I strongly agree with what Khaled A said. The real problem with SE4 is speed. Webligo recommends APC but this does not speed up the script that much even if you're on a dedicated server. People have got APC installed on their boxes but still the scrip is very slow.

I feel that Webligo is prioritizing on unnecessary things which are very secondary to your customers. For example, in this release you have added enhanced Twitter and Facebook integration. But these are already provided by third parties. BTW, this may not sit well with developers.

We now have enough of this APC recommendation. Instead of relying on third part script to speed up your script, I think it is much better to make your script itself fast. Prioritize on speed. That is really what matters now. I bet lack of speed is what is hindering you to add layouts in the plugins?

Remember, it will soon be one year since SE4 was released. Since then, we have been crying for speed and nothing has been done on this.

SE4 is good enough as it is now and I wish the developers could just drop whatever features they are developing and focus on optimizing and significantly improving the speed in the next few releases. Initially, I didn't realize this seriously thinking I could just upgrade my hardware with more RAM and processors and this speed issue will be taken care of. How wrong I was. When just a few more joined in, I was back to square one. Looks like I might have to lease the whole datacenter :(

Probably 80% of SE users are crying for speed. Does this sound familiar? Remember Friendster in its early days? They had the same issue but refused to listen and that led to their downfall. If SE only hears and not listen, it could be that speed is something they can't improve much so i guess I have to reconsider this core engine which is kind if sad cos I thought it is actually quite good, except the speed that is.

  59. Mara
    Posted June 23, 2011 at 3:00 am | Permalink

@Mario Actually, we recommend that Zend Optimizer is turned OFF. IonCube is only used to encrypt the Trial, so you should be able to install APC without a problem. We recommend installing APC on the server (as long as you are not running suPHP). APC caches PHP files in their compiled state, so it offers significant performance improvements.

    1) Mara, I've been around since September 2007 and the promises of *another release* is not giving us a timeline whether to depend on you guys to finish the core or part ways and rely on 3rd party developers to finish what you guys have started.

We need *a core* to build from. We do NOT need Facebook, Twitter, Mobile, etc …

NETWORKING (Search member page is horrible. How long would it take to fix the user interface design and add List view, Gallery view and map view (networking)? A day?

SEARCHING (The MOST important thing done on the net. Not only does the search page look horrible, it also lacks a very important feature …. Auto Suggest) and

With *everyone* concerned with speed. Why don't you guys invest into your own servers and the revenue you make from your clients (monthly) will be added residual income that can be reinvested back into development? Common Sense??

Social NETWORKING (Facebook) …. Searching (Google) …. Navigating (Ajax + Interface design + Speed) …. The three MOST important activities done on the net and the three WORST features on Social Engine. If Facebook, Google and FourSqaure were real people, they would all tell you that Webligo needs direction.

I completely agree with those asking to improve the speed, I have lost a lot of users because of the speed issue on my site even thought it is hosted on quad core dedicated server. I was disappointed to find SE so slow once a few users were online chatting.

The search functionality is far too poor, auto suggestions feature will easy for SE to add it and I believe will greatly contribute to the quality of SE

I would recommend everyone who has dedicate servers to do some MySQL and Apache optimization, for example, turn on Keep alive on apache, increase max connections, threads etc, look online on how to optimize apache. it helped me alot.

Optimizing MySQL will also help dramatically with the speed. there are some good tutorial on that if you google it.

overall, SE is a good CMS software, I knew there would some bugs and problems, however, I had hoped that the team behind it would prioritize the improvements needed and pay attention to what most of their clients wants and keeps asking for, which is SPEED

The CDN feature is very usefull for our networks! I wish to know if on the next updates will be a localization feature also? The localization is very important for a multilanguages network…very very important!!!

Why dont you quit adding more crap and fix what you already have that sucks?! SE4 is slow slow slow! Been on board with SE since version 3 something.. Seems there is a perpetual "fix" that never gets done.. When will SE finally get a solid release???

i haven't logged into my social engine account since last year 11/2/2010. Today, I just read up that SE4 is now released and the same issue still persists – site speed. I came back here hoping this would be solved – but its the same story here. Like many others, I tried everything from minifying my javascript/css, moving them to the footer etc. with the exception of moving to a dedicated server or installing APC – why should one have too? I paid $250 for social engine, that should suffice eliminating these headaches.

New features + bug fixes version 4.1.6
    – CDN support (such as Amazon S3 and Akamai) for uploaded files
    – Enhanced Twitter and Facebook integration
    – IPv6 support
    – Ability to open/close polls
    – Additional options for handling reports
    – Increased event description size

—- Social Engine, the time spent in adding these new features, fixing bugs should be allocated in fixing a real GIANT BUG – site speed.

Anyway, i really do want social engine to succeed. What's really going on behind social engine? What's with codes core? Is it all too costly to turn back and fix the real issue here? Are we just going to patch up the problem with – install APC, minification, gzips, transferring hosting/dedicated servers? This isn't a good thing.

If social engine has to go back to the drawing board to optimize processing speed, im fine with testing another beta social engine 1.0. Lets go back to the drawing board social engine. Reverse engineer this whole web application. And before we get into releasing the bells and whistles – facebook, amazon, video etc plugins. Temporarily disabling heavy ajax features, sure lets do that too. Let's go back to the basics.

I just signed back into my account and really have no interest of registering my license. I'll be spending countless hours optimizing my sites speed and many more hours waiting for my site to load.

I'm not here to bash social engine. Their team of developers are probably aware about this and scratching their heads. It's a big price to pay at this point to re engineer social engine. There's no point into moving forward here guys.

I guess I'll return here once SE5 or SE6 in 2014 or something. I hope i see stuff like "social engine isn't slow anymore!" or "finallly social engine, my site is super fast now!"

    Thanks for your time.
