New Bi-Monthly Release Schedule

We are pleased to announce our new bi-monthly release schedule! We have decided to put a little more time into implementing new features and thoroughly testing each new version before release. We feel that an every other month release schedule will cater to this much better than the previous monthly plan.

Our programmers are working hard on version 4.1.7, and we can’t wait to show you what we’ve got in store. The release date has been set for 10th August.

Please contact us if you have any questions.

Hey Webligo team, i agree with that move. Just wanted to ask if the issues with speed being dealt with for this release. More than anything else, this is definitely a major concern (top of the list) for all SE users. Hope you guys are working on it… cheeers!!

Any chance we can get a "new posts" link in the forum that will show new posts from ALL forum categories on one page? It would make it much easier than members having to click through 10+ different sections to find all the new content.

Did you resolve the issue about members needing apporval after profile views? (Or whatever might be causing it?) I have over 50 a day…

wow nice and hope so more improvements and new featurings….

I was thinking a monthly update was going to be too frequent for me to keep up with. Thank you for adjusting it.

Also, I wanted to re-emphasize the importance of solidifying the current features. I always look forward to new stuff; however, your product would be easily superior to many of your competitors by improving the functionality of forums, blogs, videos etc.

I am a strong supporter of SE and look forward to advancements.

I can not thank you more for the latest decision. I and many others have been pushing for this for a long time. It is welcoming news to know that you guys plan to spend more time developing and testing. It will be awesome to release new versions with fewer bugs. One of the many reasons so many problems is the fact that too many many things have been left out from SE v3. Now we admins have to rely on third party developers where often time there is compatibility issues. If you guys want a solid and robust software you may want to implement more features that are essential instead of waiting for third parties to integrate them. Things like able to take a a profile picture without uploading one. From SE v3 resending verification e-mail to users that have not been verify their e-mail. A more button from the many bar. And also we would like to see more plug ins from SE. We like you guys and happy developing.

    Looking forward to this release!

Although I feel like a kid on Christmas morning each time that a new release gets posted, a bi-monthly release might be a good idea.

Hoping for a sneak peak of whats to come before the 10th rolls around

Speed is going to be the most one which will make people happy. The other thing which I would really appreciate is the ability to re-type email address during the sign up process just like password. Many members are mis-typing their email addresses then they come back and complain that they have not received the verification email only to find in the admin area that they mis-typed their emails address eg mara@yuhoo.com. More integration of the forum plugin into the core and layouts in the plugin so we can place the increasingly but unused widgets. But the most important is speed, speed, speed and speed.

Thanks for your work guys, Social Engine truly is a wonderful system out of the box. We haven't yet attained a large user base however, so if speed has been a concern for many other clients, it will be a huge issue for us too.

I'm sure you guys know how important site speed is – a slow site will lose users as fast as you can count them. Hope we don't hit this issue.

So far, so good. Very impressed. Keep it up guys.

I couldn't agree more. PLEASE fix all the little bugs. TinyMCE is a huge contributor to people's dissatisfaction with the site… in the forums & the blogs.

PLEASE fix the things you already have before spreading too thin into developing new features.

    Hello,

Hope the next version will do improvement on performance.

I did figure some tweaks on SE too boost up peformance.

It includes the .htaccess, using gzip compression, minifying css, optimizing images, minifying javascript, etc..

before our website runs slow, it was only grade C, 77%, but i did some tweaks, it boost up to 84% .

Shaun told me also to not use PHP as running CGI, that boost up our site, but we needed to reconfigure again the file permission of the folders.

The other thing is using CDN .

Great Job SE team! More power to your company.

These also help using CDN .htaccess to use cloudfront.

    RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} !^CDN_USER_AGENT$ [NC]
    RewriteRule .*.(jpg|gif|png|flv|css|js|swf)$ http://your cloudfront domain/$0 [R=301,L]

    Posted July 22, 2011 at 9:30 am | Permalink

That is definitely the right decision. I would go a step further and suggest that perhaps a little further down the line you make your new releases quarterly rather than bi-monthly.

It's been a nightmare for us having to update all of our plugins, mods and patches every time you release a new version and I bet it's been difficult for all of your third-party developers who have to update all of their products every month instead of concentrating on new offerings.

Quality will definitely be more appreciated than quantity.

Let me also just agree with your other customers above and below and say that while we all love new bells and whistles, speed is still the biggest issue that needs addressing.

Thanks for a great product that only gets better.

    Katie :)

please try to fix these three problems

1: the notification updates, if you open the update in new tab it still marked us unread update

2: the notification updates, if user1, user2, user3 commented on post1, the updated must be user1, user2 and user3 commented on your post1, instead of user1 commented on you post 1, user 2 commented on your post 1, user3 commented on your post1

3: if you comment on photo or a video from activity feed the comment doesn't appear on the photo's or video's page it self, they are seperated

I totally agree with the Bi-monthly releases.

For all who are facing speed, issue i suggest to change your hosting. i recommend a dedicated server (8GB RAM at least).

I am personally not comfortable with 3rd party plugins as each time i upgrade my SE, i have to face issues with the 3rd party Plugins…so no more external plugins anymore……

Thank you SE for your efforts.

    SE Staff,

I can not stress enough how horribly lacking the SE4 Photo Album plugin is.

First, on the product page it states "Photos uploaded by your members are elegantly resized to the dimensions you specify." We were able to do this in SE3, but for the life of me I can not find where in the admin panel to change the dimensions from 720×720. I am starting to think that it doesn't even exist.

Second, the degradation of uploaded images is way too extreme. This was never the case with the SE3 plugin. Simply put, images viewed through SE4 look horrible. When compared to the original image (even with an original size of 720×720), the uploaded image is clearly of lower quality. I understand everyone uses the SE4 software for different purposes, but I don't think its too out of the norm to have a site that is media based. This simply won't do. I'll be honest with you, I can't even imagine what I am going to do if this, at the least, is not resolved for August 10th's update. Wait 2 more months? 4? 6?

Lastly, where is the lightbox feature? Other websites are killing me in the gallery department.

I really don't mean to complain. Look at my support tickets for SE3 (yes I do mean SE3), then look at the responses, and you will see why I feel so let down with this plugin.

    Thanks,
    Dave (Original purchase '09)

    Hi Mara,
Thanks for all the hard work on your guys end! Greatly appreciated!

Do you be any chance know when we can expect a rough idea of what will be included in the new release?

  55. Milton
    Posted July 27, 2011 at 4:12 am | Permalink

I agree with the image; All the images were supposed to re-size according to SE. However, I have to re-size all the images I have to upload. It is frustrating. One simple thing SE can do is to allow users to use their web cam to capture profile pictures. that is very simple and should be part of the software instead of getting everything that enhances a site form third party developers. The more third party the more bugs and more problems with any update.

the number of blogs allowed by users is not working. I have a number of spammers creating tons of useless blogs on my site. I try to set the blog to a limited number but these spammers continue to post more blogs beyond the allowed set number in admin. I am not sure why SE can not follow the model than worked in SE v3. V4 was supposed to be robust and bold. Please implement more important features. I thank you guys for developing.

Please provide a user-fans pages system whith a complete note integration (like Facebook).

Please make the IM faster and more indipendent from other processes (if you don't reaload the page messages from users that just logged-in don't arrive).

Please set up pop-up notification like Facebook does, the actual way of implementing them is really slow and heavy.

Anyway, your product is amazing, keep up the great work πŸ˜€

@Michael There is not a built-in way to limit the number of networks members can join, but you can change the network settings to allow members to choose networks, have the system automatically assign a network, or have admins assign members to networks. These settings can be found by clicking "edit" next to any network under the Manage > Networks menu in the admin control panel.

  69. Posted July 30, 2011 at 12:16 pm | Permalink

I hope you guys are doing something with the subscription feature, its all good to have it but it needs to work properly:

    1. when activated and set to don't show on signup it still does.

    2. all new members are being asked to choose the FREE subscription and that should NOT happen, that should be the default subscription for all new members.

    3. if a new user try to use a paid feature then they should get a pop-up or something thats states that they have to pay to use it and they get the subscription choices.

As thats the only way it will work when havign a free site with a few paid for features.
And as it stands when activated, it should add all existing members to the FREE subscription but it dont, existing members are beign asked to choose (the free subscription when its the only one you have) or make a selection if you have both free and paid ones.

Bottom line is NO new member should be asked to select a free subscription when they shoudl be added to that group automatically
