Version 4.1.7 Release

We are pleased to announce the release of version 4.1.7! This version is now available to download from the client login area. In case you missed the features list in our last blog post, here they are again:

– Speed optimizations
– Direct signups using Twitter & Facebook
– Better handling of disabled plugins
– Theme chooser widget
– Better count of ad views/clicks
– Updated migration code
– Mootools and TinyMCE updated

    @Mark Apologies – The "test" payment gateway was used by our developers for troubleshooting, and is not a feature. If you'd really like to know how to use it, please send us an email on our contact page.

    @Hassan Page load time from our office is less than 2 seconds which is more than reasonable. Not sure where you are in relation to us, but you may be far enough away from our server so that data has to travel a long distance.

    Thanks for update, just installed it on beta site (not yet released, but very soon). We stuck with one major problem – Firefox and flash upload form, when you add photos into gallery for example – "browse photo" flash button just don't work (all ad/flash blockers deactivated in browser). But with Chrome flash form works OK. Just test with 4.1.7 – problem with Firefox still here :(

    I get a broken image, when I enable facebook/twitter on login. It shows broken image path to.. http://application/modules/User/externals/images/facebook-sign-in.gif

    obviously, the path should go to…

    can you tell us how to manually input this?

    Tried to upgrade 3 times, finally got the files installed but every time, now I have to restart but every time I get connections problems in the internet (page can't be found).

    This happens when this url is my browserbar –> http://coucon.nl/install/manage/prepare, same with my other install http://e-quipment.net/install/manage/prepare

    Do you know what the problem could be before I try it on my third more active installation?

    Thanks for another great update. If you're looking for ideas for the next one, how about the option to allow members to login with their username as well as their email address? That would be so useful and would really help sites which use usernames for logins. That would also help to increase your customer base as existing communities that use usernames for logging in cannot easily move to Social Engine without a lot of hassle and extra coding.     In the new activited feed feature… appear in the main feed
    – X like this video, or Y like this groupe or Z like this photo….
    All this new feed when activated and display in the main feed on the home page or user profile page make the "View More" button down of the page to disappear, when unselected in the admin activated feed seting the "view more button" appear normally…
    Do anybody else have this bug?

    I would like to know what happened to se4.me. I always went to the "unofficial" SE site to see how upgrading was going for other people before I took the plunge myself and It is gone. There was a lot of useful stuff on that site and good people willing to help. And I loved Clair and I am worried. Her other site is gone too.

    Upgraded 4.1.6p3 to 4.1.7, now in http://maclearning.org/admin/user/manage there are no Joined IP and Last Login IP listed. I hope these aren't wiped out…

    A suggestion: how about a ban link available on this page for each user that would automatically take the necessary steps.

    Site is more speedy on all page exept for home page with is 20 time more slow than before why? before the update with 50 set in activity feed seting the home page was charging quicker than now with activity feed seting set at 20, I think i ll go back to my backup with the rest of bugs not fixed :(

    I have updated and have to admit that i am very disappointed with this upgrade, personally i think you should have spend another 2 months doign somethign more useful on the engine and plugins before going live.

    Can someone tell me how and where this "Theme chooser widget" should be placed to work as i have tried it on different pages and it dont as for this "Mail can be send by passing user_ids" how exactly is that supposed to work.

    The payment module is still not functional in a useful way for site to have free and paid features as it dont cater for the basic things (ie. make one feature paid and another free).

    Please take your time and make the other upgrade useful and workable and thats even if it takes 4 months to get out something good and worthwhile.

    Radcode have a subscription for V3 that you should take and upgrade for V4 and it will be perfect for the cause, so you can either give him exclusivity to upgrade his or you can buy it from him and make it yours am sure you can work somethign out as business people that will be good for you both.

    i have updated this morning and since the update my VPS server is overloading with connections from just two users. Apache is running a lot of processes which makes the server crash.

    10214 0.0 0.0 /usr/sbin/apache2 -k start 0 24 25244 S 00:00:00 www-data

    this process is loading up in excess, at least 200 threads.

    there are only 10 registered users but this seems to happen from 2 logged in people.

    Has anybody else experienced this issue since the update?

    It really frustrates me when I see some people asking for SE to do everything! You actually have to put some effort in yourself. For example, the log in with username or email. There is a mod by a developer that also happens to be very affordable, although that would seem to be a very basic expectation as well so excuse me for using your comment as an example Katie. Essentially my point is SE can't give us a winner, we have to create it putting in some hard work and creativity ourselves. In the same light, I do think that a section for suggestions and where to next road maps etc. are also good.

    Yes you will brother, I've been member since SE3 and I haven't payed a single extra doller, except for buying support, migration service, new plugins etc. When it comes to long term post-selling service, SocialEngine Inc. are just so fair. That's why we're very loyal to them :).

    @Glenn This feature allows you to sign up using Twitter or Facebook accounts without needing to create a separate account. I believe it imports username and email, but nothing else.

    @Jorge We upgraded mootools, so that might be part of the issue. If you have customised your layouts, then you'll want to update the version there.

    Hi I have just upgraded but It wont upgrade the Core 4.1.7 i get the error: Query failed with error: Mysqli statement execute error : Can't DROP 'start'; check that column/key exists

    also in Members 4.1.7 i get the error: Query failed with error: Mysqli statement execute error : Duplicate column name 'access_token'

    This is a constant complaint amongst users that are not being addressed.

    1. YouTube videos not loading.
    2. Theme widget not working
    3. facebook/twitter buttons (patched)
    4. Unable to paste into WYSIWYG editor.

    I am very disappointed about the 4.1.7. Nothing really changed.

    Just to main few things:
    No visible speed improvement.
    No extended deployment of Ajax.
    Still noly few pages are widgetizable.
    Search is still poor.
    Same horrible long main menu due to no pull-down menus.
    No activity filtering.
    Still poor members page.
    (with reference to Larry G. ->) Poor deployment of (free) payment plans.
    a.s.o.

    And finally: still buggy .

    Cannot believe that this is the result of 2 months work. So, I doubt that we can expect a significant improvement for 4.1.8 after the next 2 months.

    Hi, I was looking at the Music plugin in the SE4 Demo at http://demo.socialengine.net/music . I did not see the add to my playlist feature even though I was logged in and own a playlist 'Test' So has the feature been removed or am I missing something ?

    @Mara i didnt ask where it is, what i am saying is yes it maybe working for you but as you will see i am not the only one saying thats its not working at all, all its does is refresh the page so thats why i am asking if it has to be placed on a specific page to work, if not then its not really working in real time.

    I am not sure if its related, but I don't how how it wouldn't be, as it's too big a coincidence.
    I updated late Wednesday nite 2AM (or early Thursday), and Thursday during the day while uploading some articles, only 2 users on, me and a staff member, I had two tabs open she had one, my server CPU usage spiked up to 100/100 and Concurrent Connections tapped out at 20/20. My site started giving us Inter Server Error 500 messages and timing out randomly and often.
    My host is Arvixe, I use Cpanel. I have a bizz package. This wasn't happening before. Anyone else experiencing this? SE, would you happen to have any idea what it could be?
    I am so close to launching, wouldn't want this to stall my progress.

    I upgraded to 4.1.7 but for some reason it failed, I can no longer get access to the 'manage plugins' area as the page no longer exists? I contacted support but as per usual it takes an age to get any sort of response. Worst is your forced to pay for support which takes so long to respond.

    …would love to see more control of page/templates layouts for all social engine plug-ins (really need to be able to monetize the pages of certain plugins with banners and other revenue generating programs….integration would be super simple with controllable/editable templates for all of those areas)

    @BN The twitter/facebook images issue was addressed yesterday, and a fix posted here in our knowledgebase: http://www.socialengine.net/support/article?q=189&question=Twitter-and-Facebook-icons-do-not-display-with-version-417 The other issues were tested by our programmers and were shown to work, so the problem is specific to your installation or server configuration, and will require a support ticket in order to take a closer look.

    @Martin There are currently no plans for a p1 release. The only bug that has been found so far in 4.1.7 was the issue of broken images with twitter/facebook.     Bugs on my SN also on your demo version….
    in album module when you select to view a picture, and click under the picture on "make profil photo" give this result "Page Not Found
    The page you have attempted to access could not be found.

    I think se needs some major improvements on forum and video plugins. Competitors offer more features. SE is goodlooking and user friendly thats why i choose SE but needs a faster development for the plugins.

    The youtube upload problems and theme widget are problems related to the 4.1.7 update.

    Don't want to pay for support for bugs right out the box.

    It seems like a few people have problems with paying 50$ for help every time. My only problem is that I used help t3 or 4 times through the month for short questions and that was it. 20 days pasted with no help. Now I can see that I will be needing some help during this installation but it is time to buy more help. I have made suggestions before regarding this, like lowering the charge or making it much less the more months you buy.
    I have another suggestion:
    By now SE team should have an indication as to what the average cost is per problem or question. I suggest allowing smaller payments per question. For example. charge 2.50 or 5$ per question. This way far more people would have no trouble just dropping a quick question in the support section.

    I also think this is great and im very happy as well , for those thinking of buying, you can read my comments in last blog post, im a real customer and a happy one ( yes im to scared to upgrade from 4.1.6ps because dont want any problems but im also happy as it is hahaha so gonna wait out with my few bugs till nect 2 month upgrade , really this script is good and allows you to do allot and im sure also that the team is working very hard and will keep working hard ( well i hope they are ) to stay on top of the competetion in this market , im sure there is good money to be made if they do there best so why not get as many good people on it as poss as the battle begins with other ie phpfox .. Over all very happy i choose this path and thanks SE team .. I already do recommend you 😉

    hey Mara,

    You guys are doing a great job-I'm embarrassed by those being so critical-perhaps they should try to build their own app and see what its like? I'm trying to find that theme widget you refer to-I get over to the layout page, and it seems the same, ditto for the theme page-am I doing something wrong?

    You have to wonder if some of these bugs people have is because of the 'restart' on the installer, but the admin not know to go back to the package handler / 'install new packages' to see if anything is left in there?

    If you are installing and it restarts, shouldn't the handler finish installing any packages that are in there to start with? There shouldn't be leftovers right?

    Why isn't the admin allowed to have all the TinyMCE controls working for them by default? The announcement block only has limited functions.. Admin should have it all.

    was not yet through setting up my site with 4.1.6p3… Just upgraded. Had no problems what so ever… Only that the third party mobile plugin from hire-experts is not loading properly… Been advised to reinstall… Its that I am not seeing any difference. however guys keep it up… You are great…

    Please Consider the speed issues… It's an issue… Some of these networks are going to have 3000 users connected at the same time soon… Thank you…..

    Photo Album bug still there. Clicking the next button, etc, not working right…

    Why should I pay again for support when the new bug has emerged from upgrading my software to the latest version. This is your software bug, not my support requirement. It was working fine before I upgraded. I only have the one issue, I don't want months of support to help me do lots of things, I want a software upgrade bug fixed…..please!!!

    Nice Update Overall, although there may be an issue with the photo albums update. It seems some files are being uploaded to other peoples albums and in some cases there is just a complete failure in the upload process.

    On this version, Default Level Members are no longer able to edit and delete their forum post or report posts even if they're enabled to do so in the Admin. I also tried this on your Demo and is the same. Why?

    Then, we have this copy and paste bug in the forum and blog which have been around for quite a while now. Again you have not fixed it despite being one of the most annoying bug to Members. Why?

    Also, have fixed the bug where new signups cannot appear on the activity feed when payment subscription is disabled? I cannot see this in the changelog. If not why?

    Please don't tell me to submit a support ticket if I would like your technicians to take a look the issues because my support expired ages ago and it is not fair at all to buy another support to fix, for example, the bug of members not being able to edit or delete their own forum posts while this was not the case in the previous version.

    I appreciate The update and the support but I think it is crazy having to pay $50 for a glitch that effects some users. the fact that I am using the updater provided by yourselves and Once complete I get the following:

    Core 4.1.7 i get the error: Query failed with error: Mysqli statement execute error : Can't DROP 'start'; check that column/key exists

    also in Members 4.1.7 i get the error: Query failed with error: Mysqli statement execute error : Duplicate column name 'access_token'

    I have spent so much on a single support ticket that runs out after a month for asking one question, it is ludicrous.

    I do appreciate the support but I think it should be based and a light medium and heavy basis for eg. if you are asking questions every day you should have to pay for that but if there is a bug that you may query once every 3-4 months it should be a different tariff.

    @ Mara is my English too difficult to understand? Now I will explain it in practical way. Login in your SE demo as a regular member (not as admin, super admin or moderator). Then, go to the forum and post on any thread there. After that try to edit or delete the post you have just posted. You won't be able to delete or edit your post because the "edit" and "delete" bottoms are no where to be seen.

    Regarding the copy and paste bug we have reported it here several times. I emailed you long time ago about this bug but nothing was done. I can't bother to send emails anyome. It is simple. Again, login your demo. Create a new blog entry or forum thread/post through the tymce text editor. Copy a text from another web page, and past it on the tymce text editor. It won't paste. Simply, you can't paste on the tymce text editor. I have tried in chrome, Firefox and IE and is the same problem.

    By the looks of all of these I think I will wait until I hear positive reviews of this new update. So far looks like a support nightmare. Its a pain to be excited about an update only to be requested to pay for a support ticket because of a bug found….there is a theme in these comments….I wonder if they have a beta testing group to work these "bugs" out before they do a mass public launch. It seems these days that the public at large are the real beta testers for regular releases amongst all software vendors.

    We just tried the new upgrade – MAJOR problems. Pages not faster.

    Example –

    Avoid HTTP 404 (Not Found) error – Pre 4.17 Grade 100
    Post install 4.17 grade Zero – with 17 errors

    As well, we went from 100 grade for having no parallel requests to a ZERO with over 46 parallelizable requests

    These are with Page Speed – our page load went from 3.52S to 12.04S which is mostly attributable to bad requests. We have gone back to last revision before today's attempt to upgrade.

    The total requests for the page INCREASED to 84 from 73.

    @ Mara the things mentioned by BN and Anthony are not request for new features. These are bugs and have been there for ages

    Some few example of very basic bugs in this version:

    1. Despite having, icons to insert YouTube videos in the blog and forums, we can't do so.

    2. We cannot paste in blogs and forums through common browsers such as Chome. This bug started in a previous version when you updated the tymce. Since then refused and/or ignored to fix it.

    3. Regular members cannot edit or delete their own forums posts. Only super admin and admin can do so. In the previous versions, regular members were able to delete or edit their. In this version, they cannot even report abuse because the relevant bottoms in the forum are no longer there.

    In my previous comments, I invited you to check these bugs in your demo, but you didn't bother to look. Instead, in your latest post you have treated these reported bugs as new feature request. It is very surprising to hear that these items worked for your programmers during testing. But the the same items do not work even on your demo. Under what sort of environment do you test the item?

    So, we will have to wait until you discuss features for the next version before fixing bugs like regular members not being able to delete or edit their own forum posts? What should I explain to my users about the "delete" and "edit" bottoms missing in the forums. Or are you suggesting that we should pay you to fix this bug, even though it was not there in the previous version? Or should we revert back to the previous version until you fix these bugs in the next version which means this version will become redundant?

    I understand you have a small team but don't understand it when you say these items work for your programmers during testing whilst the the same items do not work even on your demo. This raises more questions on how your programmers do the testing that they could not even notice the missing "delete", "edit" and "report abuse" bottoms in the forum plugin.

    Of course, SE4 is still new and we expect bugs. However, I don't think it is right when we discover and report those bugs, you defend yourself saying that they are new feature request. How come a feature which was working perfectly in the previous version, disappears in a new version and when we question about it, you say is a request feature?

    I am sorry for this rant but you Webligo need to get their act right on how to address bugs. If you continue to address bugs sporadically while creating new ones in every new version, like you're doing now these bugs will never end and your small team will become more stretched to improve the script. The result will be customers' dissatisfaction which I am sure you don't want. You need a new and a proper system of dealing with these bugs because the current one is simply not working. Your customers' responses substantiate this.

    When repairing MySQL database, the tables are not reparable. Each table, with the exception of very few from third party plugins, provides a note that "The storage engine for the table doesn't support repair". Is this normal? My host says this is not normal and need to be fixed. This has been the case from day one I started using the first SE4 release.

    Also, even after updating to the latest release, the script is too much resources, even where there are no people on site. Host thinks this is because the script is using InnoDB database which affects the performance of the server which in turn affect the performance of the site. Does SE4 uses InnoDB database? Can you clarify on this matter please?

    I have totally to agree with Halal T.

    A bug tracker system (JIRA would be the best with confluence, from atlassian) would be needed. A Social Network is not the kind of software you buy for your use only. We act as developers and we should report our customers when this mentioned bugs would be fixed. If not, they blame us and returns to Facebook or big social networks. Unfortunately, be have to deal with this to create niche social networks.

    I will propose some kind of Agile methodoly for developing (Scrumm, would be the best) then we vote for the fixes, follow their development, and get those fixes ready in short springs (2 weeks).

    In my opinion is the smartest way of succeding. I will focus on creating a better core, while some part of the team releases an almost bug free version of addons.

    Then new features can be put on the dashboard, and let us vote which one are on ranked 1st. Zynga works this day with Small 10-15 people teams and their success is more than known by everyone.

    I suggest to add Scrumm or any other kind of Agile development process to the success of the engine. Every release we see people claiming for same bugs for months and this hurts Webligo and us as social network companies.

    Also I see a big problem with 3rd party developers integration. There is not a way to offer them a core for making of addons work as a unit. If I use an addon for 3rd party, would need it to integrate its features for the rests of addons. This should be implemented by core, and fix some common rules available for social networks for some years.

    Also some scrow would be needed to verify some kind of 3rd party developers. Some addons doesn't work with others, and it's a waste of money, time and dedication.

    I have to agree with @Amando B . I haven't even bother to upgrade yet because of so many bugs been reported and it usually take you guys 2 to 5 days to fix my bugs once I report them , that hurt's my community. I have future plans for new big projects but I have to put them in hold just because of all of those bugs especially loading speed see once you install 3party plugins your site start loading slower and slower that is something that needs to be fix.

    Getting ready to download the 4.1.7 release. I was wondering if the My SQL error was fixed in the 4.1.7 release once found. Or do I need to download the release and then download the engine4_r9166.zip and extract it's contents? Any help would be much appreciated.

    I agree Victor. We need someling like http://aloha-editor.org that allows for repository integration. This would tie the text editor into our pages, events, members, images, videos, etc. to help make it easy for members to add links to our content through a consistent interface. We can't and shouldn't expect end-users to know anything about HTML, making links, etc. Social Engine could be cutting edge in this user experience area.

    If you experience the MySQL error during installation, please follow the steps outlined in the troubleshooting article (http://www.socialengine.net/support/article?q=192&question=Bug-in-MySQLi-extension-causes-Apache-500-error). You may not necessarily receive the error.

    For those of you getting – Failed getting token and token secret from response – when trying to authenticate twitter, 99/100 the issue is a timestamp error. In other words your server's time is incorrect. Email your host and ask them to make sure the server's time is correct. Once they have updated your server's time you should be able to connect to twitter without issue.

    How do you privatize the website with 4.1.7? Currently, visitors can view every aspect of my website (polls, groups, forums, etc. they can even cast a vote on the poll). I've checked the knowledge base but to no avail. Would really not like to allow visitors to be able to see any plugins–only sign up or log in)

    Please share resolution to issue.

    @Moni You can edit public access to pages from the Admin Panel > Settings > General Settings, and by editing the Member Level Settings of Plugins for the Public member level.

    Unable to post YOUTUBE video onto status bar and inside blog.
    I've sent several messages regarding this…

    When posting inside status bar, it says ERROR HAS OCCURED

    When posting inside a blog, it shows the youtube when entering the url, but when saving and viewing the blog, it disappears.

    Please address this issue!

    Since I upgraded to the latest version my fb and twitter image for Login has disappeared. Anyone know why and how to correct it ?

    When a user posts a comment on another user's profile, the system do not sends a notification email to the another user. This occurs when the user use the Spanish language by default.

    @LuisP. debes tener un problema con el archivo custom.csv que se creó en la carpeta /application/languages/es
    Con toda seguridad o faltan las traducciones de estos emails, o las que tienes están mal. Para corregirlas o agregarlas vete en el admin a Settings y Mail Templates verifica primero la versión en inglés que es la que te viene con el CORE de SE, abre luego la versión en español y mira si existe, si no copia traduciendo del ingles lo mismo que ves en la versión original. Ten cuidado con las variables entre [ ] pues han cambiado desde la versión primera de SE4 hasta la última, y si el pack de lenguaje que has comprado es viejo, puede estar allí el problema también.

    @Moni is easy, just go to each pluging and select the privacy options, then some plugins or pages does not have this option on the plugin itself but you can go to the Layout Editor, and select on Edit Page Info wich users you like to have access to the desired page.

    module-core-4.1.7 : MySQL InnoDB Storage Engine
    Unable to check. No database adapter was provided.

    I have made the changes to application/libraries/Engine/Sanity/Test/MysqlEngine.php but still get the same result.
