Tips and Tutorials: Photo Sharing

Social media interaction is often as visual as it is textual. Facebook’s billion dollar acquisition of Instagram, and the popularity of photo-sharing focused services like Pinterest, Flickr, Tumblr and others, means people enjoy sharing photos, and may even expect your community to offer these sharing features. Of course, photos may not be right for every community, but for anyone looking to increase engagement, photo sharing is a sure bet.

How is member interaction encouraged? Profile photos share personality and identity with other members. Photos promote discussion, and are often relevant to purpose of the community—members share photos of their pets on Pawsley, and motocross riding on realMotocross. Friends can upload albums, tag one another and comment. Social media curates memories of their experiences, and your community acts as the home for this engagement.

Now, time to start sharing photos, right? Great. Obviously, you can check out our Photo Albums Plugin, but there are many other resources available as well. Third-party add-ons and custom development expand photo sharing possibilities for your community. Try add-ons that improve the capabilities of our Albums Plugin if you find it too limiting, such as these from SocialEngineAddons and SpurIT. Really like Facebook’s cover photo? Do the same with Hire-Experts’ Timeline Plugin. Creativity wins the game, and sometimes for the lucky ones, a billion dollars!

Photosharing is a must have for any social network. I'm trying to engage my community using such features but there are some very important picture related functions that I cannot figure out how to implement in Socialengine:

    – how add keywords to photos? You have tagging but it's just for name people and friend in the pictures. How add general searchable keywords and possibly have an interactive web 2.0 tag cloud then ?

    – the standard SE search function seems limited as it doesn't work inside picture description

    – generally speaking when you have a huge amount of pictures it comes difficult to organize albums and photos, Probably we'd need some pinterest like function to gather things in boards or whatsoever.

You might also want to check our module called Media It allows to share photos in original size (with auto-resizing and caching), also users can upload HD videos, audio and pdf files.
