SocialEngine is the best way to create a unique community website. Let your friends, fans or customers geek out about anything you want.

SocialEngine 4.2.6 – Improved Site Performance and Page Loads

We’ve listened to your feedback, and we’re happy to announce that SocialEngine is now up to 60% faster! Download 4.2.6 and experience the power boost. Server configuration is still the biggest speed bump,
so please review our documentation to be sure your installation is one finely tuned machine optimized for speed.

As always, please remember to backup your site before upgrading. You may view the full changelog, and here’s our highlights.

Highlights:
  • CSV language packs can now be converted to PHP arrays from the Performance & Caching page in the admin panel. Since Zend_Translate is a major component of SocialEngine’s code, allowing PHP Arrays, in addition to CSV files, improves performance and speed, and the language can still be easily modified. Please note that the initial conversion may take longer than 30 seconds, but this will improve future page loads.
  • HTML files are now compressed using Gzip. Gzip compression provides maximum benefit for users accessing your community from slower internet connections, and is a simple and effective way to save bandwidth and improve site speed.
  • Bug fixes include – Improvements to our Grid Theme, Invalid Birthday Field error is now fixed, and user icons are now displayed in Forum posts.

As usualy – you just messed up another few things.
Any new version is worst than previous – this is very bad for your company.

    – Language wont work anymore – uploading and creating new pack wont work. You totaly messed up Language Manager – Way to go on you upgrade!

    – Performance and Caching settings wont open.
    – Build a packages in Developer SDK wont work

Are you work something, or just futher screwed SE?? What’s going on with you, people??

Seems like there’s serious issues with the Language Manager and translations. Since I’m heavily dependent on my Swedish translation I don’t think I will upgrade before I know everything will work. A comment an an explanation from the developer would be much appreciated. Thanks.

My site already loads quite fast @ 2.9 seconds to usable point and further 4 seconds in background, not sure why so many people have speed issues. So if you talking 60% improvement then my site should load in less than 1.5seconds :) And just a note I have tons of extensions running from socialengineaddons, hire experts, younet and few others (about 30extensions) and none of this has slowed my site down.
Use a decent server and use mecached it realy works like a dream to speed up your site.

I understand their frustration. I cant agree more. I would be mad too if I had bugs, Just felt it was more ideal to complain without bashing. After all complains are good for business, they suppose to help one improve if one is customer-centric. However, from my experience, coding aint easy, a little mistake can mess up everything, it takes a lot of hardwork and dedication for things to be closest to perfect cause they can never be perfect. That said, it would make a lot of sense if the guys from socialengine respond quicker to these complains. By the way, thanks for looking me up and for your post with regards to speed. Helpful.

Just installed on a 4.2.5 site with lots of language customizations for English. When I turn on the new Convert Translation CSV files to PHP Array, it reverts all my language changes to their original values. Turning it off doesn’t switch them back, so it appears that installing 4.2.6 and turning this feature on completely deletes all modified language values. NOT A GOOD THING™

I concur with above reports, on upgrade cannot access Performance & Caching settings, also cpu usage has gone crazy now on upgrade, before upgrade average cpu usage less than 5% on this LVE Unit now shoot up to 28-40% after upgrade, I am reverting back to previous 4.2.6 version.
Will await all bug fixes before attempting upgrade again.

Here are some of the issues I’m having with the new release:

Updating from SE v4.2.5 to SE v4.2.6:

During the upgrade process couldn’t get past the permissions step. All permissions of the directories were recursively set to 777. I also contacted my hosting company to triple check that all directory permissions were set properly. After five failed attempts I decided to try a fresh install of SE v4.2.6.

    New Install of SE v4.2.6:

I was able to install a fresh copy of SE v4.2.6 without incident.

    – Can’t access Performance & Caching (“Settings” > “Performance & Caching”)
    – Development mode does not reflect .css template changes.

If I make a simple change to the .css file like change of link color, put in development mode then back to production mode, the changes do not update.

SE Upgrading 101: Always have a development site
and back things up. NEVER update your production site right
away. Create a sub-domain for testing.
test.yourwbsiteDotcom I lost a lot of users making the switch from
v3 to v4. We have yet to recover from it. We even considered going
back to v3 and losing a few features until SE gets a truly stable and usable
v4. Bottom line is don’t put faith in things that you cannot
control. Always assume that “something” will go wrong!!
That way, you are prepared for the worst, but you can always hope that you’re
wrong. I know that seems a little backwards, but that’s just how it
is when your hard work and time also relies on others.

Since there are so many complaints, we won’t even run this update on our
    testing version.

My true concern is… “Does SE run these updates before release?” If
so, what are they using, and why aren’t they noticing these bugs before the
release. Or, are we just the guinea pigs? I don’t
mind being a guinea pig, as long as I know it and I’m in turn getting something
out of it. (Free plugin and/or customer service)

Another thing that we have to think about is the fact that when using third
party code, you can never assume that code will be friendly with the new
SE. Again, always assume that it won’t therefore the only
“surprise” you will get is a GOOD one.

I know this doesn’t help those who did the upgrade already to their production
site, but hopefully it will help you in the future.

I hope for everyone involved that SE is working overtime to patch the issues.

    Best wishes

Speed upgrades are always a plus, so we have to applaud Webligo for the attempt.

English Language disappeared. As i am reading, i hope this BIG issue ‘ll be fixed by SE team asap. We have so many problems right now without english language on our site. I wonder why SE didn’t check this new release before publishing. We can’t go back now. I agree with XProfessorX we all need to check new releases in a subdomain but isn’t better that SE does the check before releasing a new version?

Poeple complain about the speed and performance mostly because :

    1) They don’t use a good server2) They don’t optimize the server for SE3) They overload their SE with tons of plugins4) They install nulled and pirated plugins in their site
    5) They have dependencies in their customized SE script from other websites during the page loads.

The CVS replacement in this version is a HUGE improvement tho.

  50. Posted August 10, 2012 at 6:24 pm | Permalink

I have a question about the CVS conversion, how often or when does the script check the CVS files for conversion ?

  51. Posted August 10, 2012 at 8:51 pm | Permalink

We’ve released an updated 4.2.6 that fixes the errors you’ve encountered. Please perform the upgrades again and languages will be fixed. Also, when loading the “Performance & Caching” page the PHP array will be created. This will take a bit of time depending on the server. If the receive an error “Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in” Your interactive_timeout and wait_timeout directives is probably set too high. By default, MySQL has these variables set to 8 hours, which will cause it to keep stale connections open. Since your max_user_connections is set so low, you can quickly exceed the limit. Please contact your hosting provider and ask them to raise the values of the interactive_timeout and wait_timeout variables in your server /etc/my.cnf file, and you may want to ask them to raise the value of the max_user_connections, as 30 is pretty low.

Thanks! Please email us if you have any questions or encounter any other errors. http://www.socialengine.com/contact

Yip I agree most common prob is using badly configured or overloaded servers and nulled/pirated plugins.
Not too sure about too many plugins, I have loads of them setup in various configurations and they do not add too much weight to load times, but I must admit I have taken about a year to get to the optimum configuration of the plugins with regards to how and where they are used in the site.
Trial and error and loads of feedback from members helped a lot with that :)
Point 5 is an overlooked one for many SE owners, stuff like google+ facebook etc can add a lot of load time to a site depending on how they are configured and where in the world the site visitors are located in relation to the SE site and the 3rd party calls.

The problem with memcache is if you use a directory for development and or staging, memcache can and will write and overwrite on your live site as well. It does not distinguish between directories.

They are both quite different in the way they work and are intended for different purposes. Memcached is a distributed caching system, whereas APC is non-distributed. APC is bit more efficient and better in long run. PHP 6.0 will have APC included as default, so that may give you a idea of what’s better.

I only wish I hadn’t done the upgrade because it literally disconnected and changed so much on my site, I have over 100 plugins, add-ons, modules on my site. It is definitely customized and looks and runs great. I have upgraded my site with every SE upgrade before this and never had one do so much damage (The Language editor is now broken, the menu editor is now broken, reverted ALL my edited words and phrases back to default, it changed my footer, etc). Even after restoring my site, there seems to be some issues that didn’t exist before. So I have my work cut out for me getting everything back to normal. I also agree with Beckie, in that SE is still the best value, best looking S.N framework around. They just need to really TEST(short BETA) upgrades real well before releasing them to avoid MAJOR debunkles like this. I was really disappointed in SE on this one but hopefully they are rapidly working on a patch or remedy so that die hard users can download and use this latest upgrade. SO PUT A MOVE ON IT SOCIALENGINE, people are waiting and hoping this is your highest priority since it’s already been released and downloaded by many of your customers.

I agree I love SE to bits but you have to keep tweaking to find the best configuration for your needs. And never do upgade soon after release, rather wait for all the BUGZZZ to be reported and fixed.

Also Always first do upgrade on dev server to prevent problems.
If you do not have a dev server then first make a backup of your entire site and dbase then do the upgrade, if things go bad then at least you can revert back within short time :)

Maybe this question has been asked before, why do we not have a SE demo installation here where we can all be members and experience SE as installed by the SE team, for “real life” testing by us the loyal paying supporters of SE?
I know in the past there was a SE demo site here where SE admins could register on and test things, interact etc…
Why is it not available anymore? Or if it is still here, then where is it so that we can live-test?

Well, unlike most times when I usually wait, I went ahead an updated without waiting for invariable bugs to be worked out. What was I thinking? I am suffering from the same Language pack issue. Lost ALL my language customizations and cannot access the Performance and Cache page. I continue getting a 500 Internal Server error. And this is after I installed the supposed update for the update. Oh, and for those wondering, this new fix won’t fix your language customizations.

OMG the lag is worse than ever!! I can’t even access the performance and caching options because as soon as I attempt to goto the settings it takes 2 minutes of nothing & then goes to a 500 internal server error. What exactly did you fix? I paid the $50 for support to get these bugs fixed on my site, nothing was fixed & then this starts happening with the upgrade. This is getting really bad.

We are experiencing the same problem, as usual. I honestly don’t understand why they can’t get it together. Our website/organization has suffered since day one of purchasing social engine. Their support is horrible and verrry sloow. I wish I could get support as fast as we wrote that thousand dollar check. Why should we have to pay for support for a product we bought, when the core issues are social engine’s lack of professionalism.

As you can tell I am not a happy customer. And since I have nothing else to do but wait for a response to the many emails I have sent them regarding, at least, their last update -we are basically SOL!

If you are reading this before purchasing social engine, I would recommend taking a look at some of the issues us paying customers are having. (I wish I checked the threads about them before we wasted our time and money :/ )

Investing in social engine could be the worse thing you can do, well… if you want your website/company to succeed that is.

Us customers aren’t hard to please, we just want to get what we paid for (or at least what we thought we were paying for).

Absolutely agree with all points! We have developed many high volume sites with SE, customized it or extend it, and never had a single problem that people mention. If there ever is, we can fix it in few minutes. Problems and Complains usually comes from limited knowledge. Everybody these days wants to be the next Mark Zuckerberg but they don’t realize that he knew what he was doing, had vast amount of knowledge about the technology he was using and could do programming him self. SE team did amazing job and is giving it out for free (I don’t consider 3 digit sum adequate for this great collection of code – hundrets of thousands of lines of code…). Thanks.

I feel your pain DJ Daddy. I always wait and this time I came really close to not waiting. When the update notification came out I wasn’t busy and I thought to myself ‘why don’t you install it now and get it out of the way?’ Then I reminded myself there are always problems with it. But then I told myself this time will be different. I bet they got it right this time. And just as I was getting ready to download it, the phone rang. Thank God the phone rang! Because it was one distraction after another after that and I just never got around to it.

The thing that baffles me is with all these complaints there are obviously some very serious problems with it. I mean it has taken people’s sites offline. I just don’t understand why they’re still posting this upgrade in the download area KNOWING that these problems can knock people totally offline! Better still – it seems they should just pull it altogether until they get the kinks worked out. It’s amazing it’s still being offered with all these huge known problems.

lucky you Jonathan :) I had a similar experience but mine was much more embarrassing, my intuition told me not to install it, but I figured I would just get it out of the way before we started our advertising campaign this past weekend. Bad move, as a result we’ve lost hundreds of customers, and now we are officially -completely off track of our goals. :/ …so yea lucky you :) Do you have any recommendations for other social networking infrastructures? lol oh wait I can’t even afford to buy another one, I wasted our overhead budget on social engine :/

That’s terrible. I have to say – they often act as if they could care less about your visitors and members. And this is a shining example of that. They should take this download out of the members’ area until it is fixed to the point that it can’t destroy sites! It’s like malpractice.

I feel very lucky for not having installed it the first day like I had wanted to do. And I’m thankful for them allowing this blog and not censoring the negative posts. Because of that they’ll have a few happy customers still!

I don’t know of anything else out there right now. Honestly I haven’t looked for anything since settling on SE. So sorry to hear what happened to you. I know – it can be DEVASTATING when something like this happens. The fact they didn’t catch these fundamental flaws before releasing it is REALLY disturbing. And I think shows they really don’t care about their customers at the end of the day.

Do you measure with Pingdom? We are typically under 2 seconds. That is testing from NYC, our server is in NJ. We are still usually under 2 seconds using their Dallas node. I think you can see the testing of our Advanced groups here – http://tools.pingdom.com/fpt/#!/no9vHnWG5/http://www.socialgravity.com/groups

We are on a dedicated server with 8GIG Ram, dual quadcores. We are not experiencing heavy traffic, we are just out of alpha testing for past 6 months with 1000 members. We use Minify from YouNet, and GZIP of course.

We run NGINX and Apache, and file caching. You cannot use APC with NGINX, and memcache is not usable if you are running multiple development / staging sites from your main domain (example – http://www.socialengine.com/development)

Gotta take it back. My site is jacked!! I tried accessing the Performance & Cache settings and of course got a 500 server error, but when i returned to the dashboard it was all messed up, everything running down the page vertically, this happened on the LIVE site as well. I cannot put the site in development mode, or even in Maintenance mode. So, basically, my site is frozen with no ability for me to do anything about it. I’m performing a reboot of my VPS server out of desperation, will let you know how that goes.

I upgraded to version 4.2.6 without any problems. The site has really become faster than before. On GTMETRIX it is scoring 92-94% which is great and Y-SLOW has increased to 73% which is better than before. The loading time has reduced from 5 sec to 3.6 sec which is another important thing. Overall the new upgrade is very nice. However, only one problem has happened ! I have been using MAXCDN for a long time. It was working well until the upgrade. Since upgrade, the MAXCDN is not working. If I remove the MAXCDN url for my site from the General part of admin panel, every thing works okay. (I have checked with MAXCDN and there is no problem at their end). When I turned on the CDN checked the source code in browser, maxcdn url is behind the javascript as usual but javascripts are not being loaded. The result is that normal functioning of site is gone. The site runs normal when maxcdn url is taken off from admin panel. I flushed APC cache, used without cache, cleared cache of my browsers and all possible remedies I could think of but no use. I think it is something to do with the new upgrade. I dont have their support anymore and not enough money to purchase their support which is really awful and very unhelpful (according to my past experiences). I hope my post will help the SE people to fix this bug in the next upgrade or if anyone got any solution, please post it here for my help ! Thank you SE in general for making significant speed improvements :) (cheers!)

    Great Thanks SE.
I have now tried new package on DEV server, all installs OK, can now access the Performance page, but still cannot use the feature to convert language files, seems like that is where the “glitch”: is with this update. Writes log file over 2 gigs and finally bales out with blank page, and error log shows maximum execution time exceeded. I have tried all the suggestions with regards max users wait time etc etc.
    Will continue waiting….

    Hi SocialEngine,

Forget putting energy into the Demo, and the Upgrade is still broken. I have sent you messages about the problems from the upgrade and no one, not even Matt has replied to any inquest. I am not happy about the fact that you are reading these comments and are not doing anything to make the repair or patches to fix the buggy upgrade download.

Come on SE, I am sure I speak for many of the victims of this Upgrade Atrocity. Please give us some sort of remedy for this terrible upgrade 4.2.6.

After reading all this negative comments I was really afraid of updating. Luckily I had an installation on a testserver and could try everything out. I installed the latest update of 4.2.6 without any problems! The speed improve was really nice and everything was working flawlessly. So I installed it on my real server and again encountered no problem at all. I have over 70 plugins installed and so far it is working great.

Maybe I am just lucky or SE has fixed the problems, possibly both.
Either way, you definitely shouldn´t be so personal guys. This doesn´t help at all.

I agree Tan that “…constructive criticism motivates a lot more and thus is much more effective” – but you seem to have had an easier time of it with SE. I purchased SE when it was version 4.0. I’ve had to update my website approx. 26 times since that version – some smoothly and others that have had my website down for near two weeks. I am personally tired of continue updates from software I purchased which isn’t up to a standard as originally advertised. I object to be the ‘guinea pig’ in order for SE to “get their software right”. I don’t mind the odd update (as it should be) – but 26?

I have over 70 plugins installed and everything is working fine for me. The speed improvement is really noticeable, I have all the languages, can access the memcache settings and had no other issues as well so far.

Maybe I am just lucky or SE has fixed the problems, possibly both. Either way you shouldn´t be so personal guys. Constructive criticism is way more motivating and thus more effective!

Final word: For me the update worked great.

  187. Posted August 14, 2012 at 6:29 pm | Permalink

This may be due to you your PHP’s “max_execution_time”. You can contact your hosting provider and tell them to increase this or I would also recommend updating piece by piece (instead of all at once) to not to overwhelm your server.

You could see it the other way around and say, that SE really cares about their product… 😉

No seriously, of course it´s really frustrating if nothing is working any more after an update but there are so many modifications, different settings, plugin installations, server configurations etc. out there, that it´s nearly impossible to consider every case. We shouldn´t forget this and give SE some credit here. “Show-Stopping-Bugs” shouldn´t happen though.

    Dear SE Team,
I am confused, Now you want to sell the idea of a new platform??
I have spent over $12000 already on this version and it is just starting to work nicely, and now you drop this bombshell??
I understand what you are trying to do, at some level it makes sense, but surely you should have warned us about this ages ago (nine months ago according to your latest blog) before we invested heavily on the current platform/system?
If I had known what you were planning I would simply have stayed with Ning and never bothered with the sweat and hundreds of hours getting my SE site working nicely.
Any social network big or small cannot afford to just change the whole platform (look , functionality etc) members do not like that and will leave and never come back.

I will gladly change to a new platform if it has ALL THE SAME FUNCTIONALITY AND LOOK as my current site, if not then you have wasted my time and I will have to close my business and get a job.

    Sincerely,
    Loyal Very Disgruntled SE User

My reboot of the VPS server did nothing. Arvixe performed something and fixed it. I say something because they hung up on me as I was refreshing my browser, I think they thought I had hung up when in reality I was just waiting for the site to load. It eventually did. Yet, the issue with the performance & cache might still be existent, I don’t know cuz I’m afraid to find out, every time i try it freezes my site! Just downloaded the supposedly fixed 4.2.6 (anyone notice they haven’t changed the name to 4.2.6.1) and see how that goes. I expect my site to go down soon! This sucks!

  199. Posted August 15, 2012 at 8:44 am | Permalink

Installation of “new” new 4.2.6 went smoothly. Now to test. If I don’t reply withing a few minutes, my site is down for the count.

SUCCESS! I can access Performance & Cache AND my customized Language pack is back. Great, I can move on from this debacle, I think. Now, to deal with this news of the new SE5 and the possibility of starting from scratch! It never ends.

  201. CB
    Posted August 15, 2012 at 10:43 am | Permalink

I believe this is being offered in addition to SE4. They stated towards the bottom that they would continue to support SE4. From the looks of it SE5 isn’t anywhere near production ready, and doesn’t even look like it has the same type of functionality. I assume they didn’t make an announcement 9 months ago because it was probably just an idea they started experimenting with at that time. I think it’s an interesting idea, but I’m still vested (for better or worse) in SE4, and am glad that they are at least going to keep that around, and developed. Being technology, it’s prone to rapid change. How often do people purchase a new cell phone, etc. and have a new version come out 2 months later? Like any company that wants to stay in business, they need to keep innovating.

I don’t believe it. SE4 will see fewer updates and resources devoted to it. The focus is clearly on a new system that will ultimately cost more in the long term. I love their response when asked if there will be a transistion script from SE4 to SE5 – it’s something we’ll get around too! Huh!

Right on! And if SE5 doesn’t have the same functionality as SE4, why is it even taking on the SE5 name, which would have been the next name for SE4. So where does SE4 go from here? All the way up to 4.99? So no new major releases then? They should separate these products since they are completely different, which also would make SE4 appear to have a life after SE5.

You would almost think so :( Too bad after spending over 1000 dollar for multiple licenses in the last year. Now they want me to buy extra support to fix it, although it’s almost a fresh install and after fixing the 330 error there is another error. Obviously due to the ‘fix’ a certain SE employee did. We haven’t been able to get the basic signup email process to work — resending verification emails works fine, but the initial signup process yields no email! Plus, the emails are not delivering “clickable” URLs … it’s crappy plain text … that also don’t work properly when you copy/paste the verification link into browser bar — where’s the OPTION TO SEND EMAILS AS HTML?

I was planning to upgrade to 4.2.6 (from 4.2.3) thinking that perhaps there was a problem with a php script file somewhere. But after reading all the issues that people have been experiencing I don’t think I’ll bother with the upgrade. Plus, as was mentioned by others, when you contact support the days tick by before you get a response so really a “30 day support” contract doesn’t take into account the latency of a response. Better be truthful and say “give us $50″ and we’ll help fix a few problems – -then time will run out.

SE get your act together — there are lots of people trying to run legitimate businesses on your platform and have invested the most valuable resource of all — TIME! In my case (with this email problem) I’m completely stumped — I’ve
read KB article and “help” file but it’s just a screen shot of what to
fill out in the settings form. How about harvest the problems/solutions
and post them in the forum area so that we can help ourselves. The
more information that is shared, the less “cumbersome” it is to manage a
    customer service desk.

If anyone in the SE community has any ideas for me — please let me know — otherwise I’ll have to turn off the verification / confirmation setting and just HOPE that people that signup are REAL and use a REAL email address …

btw: if there’s a reasonably priced plugin out there that does a better job of managing the signup process PLEASE LET ME KNOW …

    thanks!

This was last month and I paid my $50 for support to sort it out and Pamela did a great job and I was really pleased for about a month. I have not changed or do anything but the same problem is back so I must put up with it now or pay another $50 to fix it again!! is this going to happen every month!! I was so happy for a month when everything was working well. I need to fix this and I want to pay to have the upgrade but I am worried I am just going to buy more problems. hmmm. We did a Fresh install and bench mark testing from 4.2.1 to 4.2.6. The results….

#1 we were not able to utilize the Settings > Perfomance and Caching > Translation Performance > Convert Language Pack CSV files to PHP Array… It kept processing for about 35 sec and then gives error
“Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /…/application/libraries/Engine/Api.php on line 748″

#2 Can’t say that we noticed a big difference in this “speed” from 4.2.1 to 4.2.6.

We used SE since SE4 back in 2011 by which we do really like. I hope that SocialEngine will continue to make improvements in Version 4 and look forward to Version 5.

Converting language packs to arrays is a heavy job and depending on your server activity level it may take longer than 30 seconds. Try upping the “max_execution_time” in the php.ini file on your server.

hey trial of SE 4.2.6 is still full of errors
    errors are:
    Multiple Language not supported
if we upload old file / export csv en language and reinstall the modules it shows error
performance and caching is not accessible

I have applied all the chmod , reinstalled completely 5 times with database and files removed but error are still there

to confirm if there is a problem with a server or not I Installed SE 4.2.5 and everything worked fine,

So just simple question will be trial free of errors and if yes then when?

I hear you, I do everything I can not to deal with SE. This company is a perfect example of people making a fast buck of a new idea and walking away. From my dealing with SE “PAID” support I would punch them in the face if I could. I have never hit a human in my life! Advice if you are in deep with this group of people, stay away from them and all they do, work with the basics and deal with 3rd party companies like SocialEngineAddons and Hire Experts, they are the best…full stop.

Went to upgrade site with 4.2.6 and social engine would not accept my new FTP info so I clicked the option “None” when trying to download package files now my whole site is down please help ASAp. Thank you.

What angers me more than anything is how they like to blame everyone else out there. They recommend various developers like hire-experts.com but then blame all the issues you have after an upgrade on them. Currently my site is running in 2 different storage containers, 1/2 on the local server and 1/2 on Amazon EC2. My Friends lists are all jumbled and it started doing this BEFORE I uploaded any 3rd party plugins. Honestly, this is ruining my business and no matter what I say to them they wont help.

All I can hope for is that this post stops someone from buying this 2 bit software package until they believe in CUSTOMER SERVICE and not ruining people

I tried a new install with an old database, due to an issue I am having. I got the site back up, but when I do go to development mode, I get this error: The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression.

To fix this, I reupload the entire application dir and copy my cache and database file, but development mode still throws the same error every time I do this. Any suggestions? What file stores dev or production mode? I don’t see any change in the cache.php file.

I have upgraded to 4.2.7 and after I clicked Convert to PHP Array my site died. Getting: ERR_CONTENT_DECODING_FAILED errors. I have no way to access the admin section to fix anything. This is horrible!!!

    I have the same issue

    This line

    if (substr_count($_SERVER[‘HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING’], ‘gzip’)) ob_start(“ob_gzhandler”); else ob_start()

    in /html/application/index.php

    Why?

Because $_SERVER[‘HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING’] i send by the browser and depends from the browser, however this platform should be a workaround for this and doesn’t have.

    My workaround:

comment the lines with $_SERVER[‘HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING’] in the file /application/index.php

and just put ob_start() or ob_start(“ob_gzhandler”) without those lines.

this software has many bugs, is not good software and is expensive.

    i hope that helps

Hi, I just installed the trial version 4.2.6 and am using the Quantum red template and I noticed if you have a lot of update notifications, when you try to see them most are hidden behind the main content area. This happens on every page. Is there a fix please as I want to use this template. Please see this image to view the problem.

I can’t really go on till I fix this, I have looked at the CSS and cannot see how to fix it.

    Regards,

    Dave

    Hi All,

    I found the solution

    Go to the database :

    engine4_core_settings -> core.translate.adapter : and change “array” to “csv”

I hope that will working fine.

I am developing modules in socialengine4. Now I need to change the core functionality of the application. I need to make some changes in user signup process by adding some core features like proving auto complete fields.

I know this is a core feature of `User module of SocialEngine`. But `This is not a good practice because any update of socialengine will override my changes`.

I have searched the solution but couldn’t be able to find any thing. I know if you want to change any thing in core modules of `magento`, it directs us specific way to do that. Similarly I want to know the process, how can I change in socialengine?

    Regards
