SE4 Roadmap: Planning Ahead

In the updates to come, we’d like you to help us prioritize our development efforts. We’ll consider everything, respond as best we can, and we’ll do our best to clearly explain our choices; stating what’s possible and what’s not. We want your voice to be heard—we’ll be listening—so please share your suggestions in the comments or email us.

Here’s what we are already working on for 4.2.7:

4.2.7: The team is addressing outstanding bugs. Have we missed any? Shoot us an email.

  • Private items, such as photos, will now be hidden from plugin browse pages.
  • Fix for the default number of items on browse pages.
  • Clicking “like” or “comment” while playing a video in the activity feed will no longer pause the video.
  • Allow pagination to function properly when more than one widget is on a page.
  • Updated RSS feed widget.
  • Will be possible to duplicate pages when creating a new page.
  • Will be possible to duplicate existing member types when creating new member types.
  • Categories will be alphabetized in search.
  • Translation bugs in Events and Groups will be resolved.
  • Quantum and Grid Theme errors will be resolved.

So what comes after 4.2.7? Help us decide! Based on the feedback we’ve already received, we think these are the most-wanted features. Tell us what interests you the most, and we’ll nail down one or two key improvements in the next update.

4.2.8 – 4.2.9

  • Optimized Activity Feed – The team has identified areas of improvement for increased performance and usability, as well as updates for enhanced commenting, streamlined browsing by grouping similar posts, improved admin options, and more.
  • SEO Improvements – Options to add titles to URLs, edit URL text, and provide URL support for non-latin characters.
  • Social Sharing Buttons – Integrate additional services for social sharing as we’ve done with Facebook and Twitter.
  • Notification Revamp – Include additional notification options, display notifications without having to refresh the page, and other improvements.
  • Privacy Controls – Develop enhanced, simplified privacy controls for shared items.
  • Improved Messaging – Compose messages in a popup window rather than a new page. Also, update admin options to allow for targeted announcements and messages to specific groups of members.
  • Updated Photo Sharing – Notifications for photo tagging, mass photo editing, and photo importing via attachments.
  • Updated Groups – Improvements include new page customization options and support for custom widgets/HTML Blocks.
  • Updated Events – Improvements such as a widget for event creation on any page.
  • Anti-Spam Features – Develop improved settings and features for security and spam prevention.

These features are up for discussion, and we’re open to alternatives, so suggest away. We will continue to improve and develop SE4, and we hope this plan for open communication benefits everyone in the SocialEngine community. Thanks!

If you’re gonna implement social sharing (adding “like/send” buttons from FB) – you should then include open graph integration in the upcoming versions, so that shared objects will display good on FB. This should be built in now without having to depend on a 3rd party plugin. it will only make sense to have open graph integration since you’re planning on social sharing.

Please do update the albums plugin – being able to set maximum dimensions and thumbnails and improve the layout as well, a theater/lightbox viewer would be nice too.

The profile page would probably need some improvements too (how about a “cover photo” widget)

You should also fix the line breaks in activity feeds and comments, up to now they’re still not looking good.
The notification revamp should cover the change to “user a commented on a post you commented on” into user a also commented on user b’s post” or something like that.

It’s about time to really incorporate updated features and bug fixes on SE4, please do take suggestions from clients seriously especially now they need assurance that you’re not abandoning the product after your announcement of SE5 (which I’d rather call SE hosted) – this is not really adding new features that would otherwise make it bloated, but improving the already existing features and make it more up-to-date with today’s standards. You guys need a lot of catching up to do, but I still have faith in Webligo.

A better event module. Like a way to show members that said yes. Also to be able to put a cap on the number of guests. For example: dinner outing for 20 people. After 20 yes, event is locked. And a waiting list would be nice too. Recurrence would be nice and a list of recently used locations.

Third party developers have already finished most of the above so there’s no need to reinvent the wheel and waste time / money. What we need is “core” improvements to catch up with today’s standards ..

    1) NETWORKING: We need a geo location dump for ((( location based searching ))) for members, events, groups, classifieds, Pages, etc for 3rd party developers to integrate into their plugins. Get it FREE here @ http://dev.maxmind.com/geoip/geolite

    2) COMMUNICATION: We need a better email system like Facebook with auto suggest.

    3) REVENUE: The Subscription module (PayPal) has no “30 day trial” option built in. WHY?

    4) SEARCHING: WHY is our search box crammed on the right with no auto suggest?

It’s been 5 years since SE started. In those five years, MySpace (kids / bands) have went under while Facebook (Adults / business) have rose to the top. Instead of following a business structure that has succeeded and cater to adults and businesses, you guys continued to cater to kids / hobbies and this is WHY you have FAILED as a company and have to build SE5 to re-brand your image. And NOW, you all are bailing out on us once again to chase a another business structure that has already left you all in the dust. What are you guys thinking?

I prefer all the above in the SE core instead of third party plug ins. Having all the above in the SE guarantees that the system will work more efficiently. We have to realize many third parties plug ins affect the way the core works. I welcome SE on that and that was supposed to be done some times ago.

Matt, why did you write this article? Introducing Quantum and Musicbox Themes. You have two business models, one that succeeded (Facebook / adults / business) and one that FAILED (MySpace / kids / bands). What does music have to do with the Networking (Facebook), searching (Google) and / or (Our Revenue) and why this feature takes precedence over the above requests knowing that many of us have been waiting two plus years for the core to be completed?

Folks, Let me give it Straight to you…. SE4 has lot of basic/ Important features missing to call it as a “Comprehensive” Social Networking Platform. If it’s been priced comparatively high, then we DO EXPECT it to be a Comprehensive Feature rich Platform. So, Below is my take:

    1) Networking: Geo Location is a must have feature, coz Many Netowkrings are Global. Even if its Local they got to be Geo Location Search.

    2) Auto Suggest Search: I wonder, why is it not there.

    3) Friendship Type: I am absolutely disapppointed when they removed the “Admin Defined Friendship-Types from SE4. There is absolutely no Reason to Remove this feature in SE4 when it was in SE3. So when the friendship request is sent, there is a popup, member can select which category he wants to put the frined in and he can even send a small message while sending the Friends Request. (@mrmacias:disqus you are aware of this request right? )

    4) Email System: The existing Email System is indeed “Crude”, it can be lot better just as mentioned above.

    5) Subcategoris: There got to be a way to define the Subcategories for Events/ Blogs/ Groups. I wonder why is it not there Already? Matt Macias you are aware of this Requirement right?)

Please let me know what does not make sense in what i wrote?

There got to be a way to add “Speakers” and with ajax list the “Speakers” can be added. which links back to their profile.

There got to be a way to define Events type and their respective Custom fields.

Where is there no way to define Subcategory? It got to be there.

    As a suggestion,

We all know SocialEngine 4 needs more support to keep the team around. Dedicated servers aren’t even close to affordable when It comes to what you pay for. A dedicated server service for SE4 would be extravagant, Of course funding might be a issue, I’d still like to see It as an option.

Finally I can write a positive comment. This is the way to go. Plan ahead is something I missed for ages and make me feel better. Anyway these my list of bugs that should be related to SE base code:

    – The event privacy is bugged, this is the case: Set Privacy Event to everyone and everyone only (uncheck all the other options). Set the Event Posting options to registered users and registered users only (uncheck all the other options). When the user creates the Event, the event does not have the privacy set as expected, but it will have a _random_ privacy value.

    – Even if I did not buy a photo album plugin, the users can upload photos in the event. However they cannot delete them. Admin can still deleted them, but not the normal users

    – it would be nice to have a calendar widget for the events 😉

I agree with this, I don’t know about anyone else but the price for a dedicated server is Sky high, and if your community is new, then the costs could close your social community down. Having a hosted version of SE4 maybe another route to take, if it was affordable I’d jump on it straight away. Otherwise I have all 3rd party plugins that bring most if not all the features mentioned here.

If your doing a hosted version of SE5 would you consider the same for SE4 or is this out of the question??

    I have some features that I would like to see in future updates;

    1. TAXES: Make it possible to charge VAT / Taxes for subscriptions. Without this I can’t monetize my community (business network). Paypal has this possibility of adding the extra line to the charged amount so it would only mean a mod of the payment module that tells SE that’s it’s ok to add the extra line.

    2. CONNECTING: Let members send a message when they want to connect with someone so that the other knows why they want to connect.

    3. MESSAGING: Have the possibilty to send a document when you send a message (.pdf for example) instead of only a picture, video or music.

    4. PHP ARRAY: This doesn’t work for me yet because of some language packs that contain strings which causes the array to go back to safe mode. I have 3 SE licenses so I have a basic language pack which I use for all my sites. This is the one that I created first from US to Dutch, took me weeks the first time to translate everything manually and don’t want to translate the same thousands of sentences whenever I build a new community.

Please let me know what is realistic for a soon to release update.

    Thanks

  42. Posted August 31, 2012 at 7:15 am | Permalink

Anti-Spam suggestion: Just give us a way to create our own customized question. This is the only thing that has ever worked for me on other sites I run! You create a question – like you tell people to type in the number “53” – SPAMMERS HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO BREAK THAT!

When we can create our own spam fence, it’s not something any other site has done and therefore not something any spammer can plan and program for.

  43. Posted August 31, 2012 at 7:29 am | Permalink

ADMINISTRATORS: Currently we have Super Admins, Admins and Moderators. I’ve never been able to figure out the difference between an admin and a moderator. These titles should have user level control. We should be able to customize exactly what each can do.

Maybe we have members who we trust and wish to give the power to delete accounts (i.e. spammer accounts to). But we don’t want to make them a super admin because we don’t want them to see all the info on the backend. Currently a moderator can delete posts – but can’t delete spammers.

We really need to be able to assign specific abilities to each member level type – especially moderators and admins. And we should be able to create a new member type and assign whatever responsibilities we want to those as well.

GROUP OFFICERS: The position of “Group Officer” (in the Groups plugin) is completely meaningless! They can’t really do anything. They can’t even delete posts! So what’s the page of a Group Officer if the group owner has to constantly go back in and delete bad posts? In large active groups, the group owner needs to share these responsibilities with others – so they don’t drive themselves crazy! Group creators should be able to customize these positions with whatever abilities and powers they want – up to having full administrative control over the group – just like the owner does.

When groups are small this doesn’t really matter. But when they get really large and active, it is often times too much for one volunteer person to handle. They need to be able to assign these responsibilities to other members so they can catch a break.

  44. Posted August 31, 2012 at 7:45 am | Permalink

COMMENTING SYSTEM: This has been my biggest pet peeve with SE! PLEASE work on the commenting system! Starting with the blogs/videos/etc. commenting system. If a blog gets 5-6 comments – the current system is fine. But a lot of blogs get hundreds of comments and the navigation system for these comments, is a nightmare!

First problem: When you load the blog you get the last 5 comments! Seriously – only 5! People need to read the comments before the 5th many times to figure out the direction of the conversation.

I’ve customized mine to display 15 comments there and that one change alone has made a world of difference.

Second problem: When you post your own comment on a blog that has hundreds of comments, upon clicking Submit, your comment is posted and you are suddenly taken to the FIRST PAGE of comments – instead of the last!

This is where the nightmare begins. Because people now have to scroll through one page at a time to get to the final page to see their comment! And each page of comments only contains 10 comments. So if it’s a conversation with 348 comments – they have to click “Next Page” 35 times! IT’S OUTRAGEOUS! This one thing annoys more of my users, more intensely than anything else. I’ve had people leave and never come back because of this.

This problem is SO EASY to fix. I paid an Indian developer $15 bucks and he fixed it – in less than an hour! He simply added View Last and View First links. We also customized it to display 15 comments on every page.

TINYMCE EDITOR: I’ve never understood why you had this editor configured differently for every area of the site. For instance why is the Group editor just a bare bones blank box with no tools!?

I wrote to you guys about this a long time ago and was told basically it was too complicated to change.

I finally figured out how to change it myself. I’ve now added an enhanced editor to EVERY section of the site – and every section now gets the exact same editor, including Groups! It’s just a matter of putting the some TinyMce code in the right pages. I just don’t understand who thought it was a great idea to have a different editor for each section of the site (forums/blogs/groups).

For instance, someone decided in their brilliance that it would be a great idea for the blog editor to leave out the “insert link” capability! But they thought it would be a great idea (which it was) to allow the forum editor to automatically create links! WTH!? Love the forum idea, but hate the blog one! Why were they different at all? Why not the same?

FORUMS: The idea of any social networking site is to KEEP PEOPLE TYPING SO PEOPLE WILL KEEP READING. So you want to make the typing as attractive and enjoyable as possible.

It seems few SE owners have really developed the forum side of their site. I can tell because SE rarely pays it any attention – and never improves it. But we’ve spent a lot of time developing the Forums because they are in fact what keeps people coming back – to engage in discussions that have rankled them for one reason or another.

But people stop coming back over time because they get so tired of looking at the same plain page. The forums just from a visual point of view need a drastic update. Think outside the box and come up with a really awesome forum design. Something different & better than any other forum. (Shouldn’t be hard to do – most forums are pretty plain and basic).

AJAX: And last but not least!!! Please make all these commenting sections with Ajax. If all the commenting areas, blogs, forums, videos – worked just like the one you’re using on this page – it would be awesome! This page works great!

It’s so much better when we can watch new comments “live” without having to reload the page. This would be awesome in the Forums as well. Sometimes there are live events our community has a mutual interest in and we’ve gone to the forums to discuss it as it happens. But it wasn’t workable because people had to keep reloading the page to see when someone had posted something new.

Yeah, we could have used the chat room for that but the chat room quickly overran the server’s resources and crashed the server. (And we’re on a super powerful server that 20 people in chat should not have affected).

But the ability to see new posts in the Forums and Blogs would be a key enhancer to the site.

THANK YOU for taking all this into consideration!

  45. Posted August 31, 2012 at 8:19 am | Permalink

p.s. I don’t understand how the comments on this page are sorted. They’re all over the place. One from 14 hours ago followed by one from 33 minutes ago followed by one from 5 hours ago! How are you supposed to “follow” this!?

Hi! We all want, want, and want! But while wanting, I keep “asking to wanting”, that the language file be separated in two. Admin to admin and user to user. Do that and I bet anything, that most of everything for the 3rd party’s will fall right in place. And bug fixes will be easier to spot and fix.

I agree with a user calendar for events, birthdays and user notes in a calendar view and list view with geo location so members can search events closest to them. Without Geo location in the core, searching for members, events, Groups, Classifieds, etc are useless.

Thanks, I like the timeline plugin – but the plugin will provide better performance if we get a core activity feed revamped and rewritten from the ground up like its a new plugin in itself – since the activity feed comes off as a module in the core. As stated in the post, the team is most likely putting a big focus on the feeds, as a huge chunk of user interaction will always begin here.

For everyone who’s asking for an app directory, ask them how many “active” users are on their site and how much money there making? .. I’m going to assume not many, because the core still needs a LOT of work to catch up to today’s standards. What good is a social “networking” platform if our members can’t search the community without auto suggest or search and/or network with members, groups, events, etc base on their location?

You guys can cater to the adults / businesses (Facebook) and make this platform a success or cater to kids / bands (MySpace) and run your company in the ground just like they did.

Moreover, we the Friendship Request can be categorized by the request sender from a (already configured list by the site owner), it will be very effective way of Adding friends as the Request Receiver can see how they both are Connected.

One member is having 100 AED in his profile and another member is having 200 AED. Now when I search members and select 100 AED from search filter, I get the member in the search results. Similarly when I search members and select 200 AED from search filter, I get the member in the search results and displays members with 200 AED. But when we select 100 and 200 both, then it does not show any members in the search results. Anyone has similar issues ?

You definitely need to fix the “FRIEND REQUEST”. Enabling Friend request to be in full Ajax so that the page does not have to be refreshed at all each time a person accepts, suggest or becomes a friend of another. This has been a thorn in the flesh for us since we have had SE and it is quite embarrassing and looks so cheesy. May be one of the determining factors of a person becoming or remaining a member of a site. This should become a major priority in upgrade 4.2.7.

One thing that needs to be improved also is indeed the commenting system – it’s when the comment thread becomes long enough and you need to scroll up just to make the comment form appear below. The comment form should become visible by default. Facebook just made theirs because it entices more interaction than clicking on “comment” just to make it appear.

    3 Letters: API !!!!!

I like the Se4 roadmap and the announced changes. I am very happy that you finally Managed it to Post a roadmap! Good Job! That is something we can work with!

A missing Feature of Se4 is in my oppinion an API for Communication with Other Applications. A simple Rest XML / json API with buildt in oauth Security as a Core Feature or Plugin so we can Access socialengine functions from i.e. WordPress or Other Websites. This would enable us to expand Se in an all New Way. Mobile Apps, wordpress Plugins, joomla Plugins… And many others could be realized by the Community with help of an API.

Especially if you give up Support of Se4 this is an Important step to keep se4 alive.

    Hi,
    1. PayPal: asked for 2 years for the default IPN string to be removed and a return URL implemented. And don’t forget a page_style param either. We cannot change the one in PayPal which is used by another that was just as stupid.
    2. We use countryipblocks.net lists so have a look at their vertical lists and implement it considering that.
    3. We use several 3rd party plugins, one f.e. for Pages (HireExperts) which you cannot beat for sure as it also includes Pages FAQ, Discussions, Contact and more. Also the Likes (which is free btw at HireExperts). Don’t waste your time trying to write plugins that they have already and solid and get updated faster than you update.
    4. Members Admin page: too basic and lousy to work with. Must offer much more editing capabilities. The Edit link is a joke with just a few things you can actually edit.
    5. Dropdowns (f.e. categories) are not sorted in alphabetical order. Really?? Yes, really!
    6. REMOVE option for plugins! All we can do is disable, but it stays forever.
    7. Flushing Referrer URLS: there is no way to select some to stay. F.e. a few sites have many referrers and we do wish to keep those while all the ones with 1 we want to flush.
These are just some of the problems. Hope you can include some of these, don’t see any of them in your list even though I’ve listed them over the years repeatedly.
    best regards,
    John

VERY VERY IMPORTANT: The most important part is registering of members! Without any doubt! And if member types something wrong he needs to enter again all data.. This is bad. It has to be ajax and it has to tell user he did something wrong at the moment, not when user clicks next just to find out something he entered is wrong.. Registering has to be fast and easy.. There is a bug when you try to send user a password if decided not to allow pass.. He can’t get it anyway.. Fix this!!

There is a lot of good info here, this should keep the SE crew busy for a while (a lot of hostility as well). Here are the features I would love to see. They have been mentioned by others, but I’d like to stress their importance.

    1. The app directory is a must. But it must be implemented as an option (on/off switch) since not every webmaster may want it or have the need for it. Options my friends.

    2. I’m waiting for SE to provide something similar to Facebook Connect, Google Connect, Twitter, etc. This would allow other sites to use our authentication and help us branch out while expanding our brand. Thus, we would need options, not a one-fits-all type of deal. This is the norm for any social network that wants to stand out these days. I know there are options out there but they’re not cheap. This can be combined with the app directory to make something very powerful (Number 1 and 2 could be part of the API)

    3. Automatic geo-location network creation is a must. This would allow a website operator to sell ad inventory all the way down to the zipcode level if he/she chooses to. Before I found SE, I was using a very crappy platform, which for the purposes of remaining respectful I will not mention here (it’s not how I do things). But this really crappy platform was a workhorse when it came to creating networks on the fly. The website admin could set to create networks on almost any profile field (country, city, state, school, zipcode, etc.) We need something we can compete with, or at least, stay afloat.

    4. Yes, the TINYMCE editor is outdated. In fact, sometimes I wish I could disable it in some areas of the site (less headache).

Lastly, I do believe that the core is the most important piece you need to concentrate on. Some of the suggestions that have been posted here have already been developed by third-party developers (which I could say the same for the three suggestions above if I wanted to develop myself). So instead of concentrating on something that has already been done, solidifying the core should take precedence. And I must say, some of the stuff that has been discussed here on that regard is right on point.

Sorry for such a long thread, but thanks for reading.

Thanks for removing my post. I thought this was an open forum for paying customers to provide feedback on SE. Well, I’ve been your customer for about two years.

Now I see why all the hostility on here towards you. Perhaps if you treated your customers with a little more respect we would actually respond in a more positive fashion. But apparently you’re already too successful and don’t need more customers. Well, word of mouth goes a long way, positive or negative, think about that.

Here’s an easy one. The upcoming Events widget does not display an events thumbnail. The Recent event widget does, but not Upcoming event. Should be a really simple fix right?

My suggestion? Speed before features. Concurrent users kill Social Engine quicker than you can say ‘the end of my buisiness’. Speed please. My other personal issue with Social Engine is the image requester used for Announcements. Where did you guys get this thing from? Do you have an HG Wells time machine in your basement? I mean retro is cool, except when it comes time to find images, then the whole Windows 98 look is makes Social Engine look like Jed Clampets patched pants. Seriously guys…put a real image requester in…

I’m thinking a known bug list of some kind, might be appreciated by many.

Issues: Dependent Questions Are not Appearing in Search Form (Browse members)

There got to be a way to show the Dependent Question in the Search Form, (Browse Members). There is no Reason why its not been done already in SE.

Think it like that: You create a Drop down with 3 Countries (USA/ Canada/ India). For each of the Drop down option you make a Dependent Question as States. So, for USA u make a list of Dependent US Stats list, same for Canada and India. (You select “Show on Browse Memeber Page” Option for all these 3 Dependent Questions Config)

Now, on Browse Member UI, there is a Search Form. You select there “Country” as USA, then its Dependent Question (States) will Automatatically will Appear. When you select India its dependent Question (States) will appear. same for Canada as well.

This is how it should be. Why is it not there Already? Its Definately a Must have Feature and I am Certainly not Comfortable going for My Own Customisation to have this. I am not Suggestion something “Out-of-the-world”.

Its a Basic Feature of any Multi-Tier Structure and Forms. So, Its not a Suggetion Feature but I am bringing to ur Attention about this BUG/ ISSUES.

Just think how awsome will it make SE when Users will have Flexiblity to make Search /Filter upto any Granularity. This is what is called a “Platform” which gives users the “Scope”. Right now in Seach Form, the Score is Limited.

Can we Please Resolve this Soon? Please?

Blog plugin needs an update badly.
The gutter search widget only works on the Blog view page and NOT the Blog Browse page so you cannot list the archives, tags or categories on the blog browser page. Each of them (archives, categories, tags) should be a separate widget that can work on any blog page.
This is a bug in the widget. I’ve fixed it if you want a copy of the fixed version.

While I’m complaining, I’ve sent in tons of bug reports but I never hear anything back and there is no place on the SE website to check to see if it was even received by anybody or if anything is being done. Can you not have a list of bugs that have been reported and are being worked on so that at least we know you got the bug report and have confirmed that it is a bug?

Thanks @rzhuk:disqus . These are some excellent points. Especially regarding the mail template option. Essentially, you’d like to receive a daily/weekly/monthly recap of the actions of those friends you ‘check’ so to speak? That’s cool!

YES! We NEED geo location in our core so 3rd party developers can build their plugins to pull from this database so our members can search members (Networking?), event’s, classifieds (Craigslist), groups (MeetUp), pages, reviews, ratings (Angies List), etc by location.

    http://dev.maxmind.com/geoip/geolite

You guys added language packs to cater to your international clients over four years ago. If we can get anything next … is to finish up this core so it is up to date with the rest of the world.

@freydrew:disqus – I appreciate your efforts on answering our issues closely. SE4 has played a major part/hours in peoples daily business. If at this time you let go by abandoning it than not only people will lose hope with the company but leave a negative feeling for further purchase. If you were with SE from beginning and you had a product installed and active community than you will know what I am sayin. With SE4 you can earn with user base / plugins more than you would imagine. I can guarantee people dont mind spending extra bucks for niche plugin your company releases. Well long story short. Listening to users needs are very important… which you have started to do. I am sure many people are expecting a lot from your side after reading your comment replies.

I for one would like to see an actual template to be designed by SE that truely shows the potential of the system other than the simple columned color changing that comes with every new template. Who cares about widgets.. Can the templates be hard coded? Show us? I have yet to see something truely amazing.. anywhere.. what is SE4 really capable of?

Can you guys revamp the member page? I liked the Myspace version alot with the searches at the top. I think this page has been forgotten, and like an optional plugin available, could really use some detailing such as options to show just the user icons..

  184. Posted September 10, 2012 at 10:19 am | Permalink

Improve the classifieds questions, or have another function all together, where you can choose contacting options. When choosing a classified question from the admin panel you cannot choose email address, so you have to just choose “single-line text input” which then of course is not an email link. Even better would be an anonymous system like craigslist, so users don’t have to display their email addresses.

Can we please have FULL CONTROL over our billing systems? I would like to charge all members of my SE site, OTHER THAN members who have contributed attractive content.

I could do this so easily if there wasn’t this stupid speed bump built into the system, requiring a “Free Plan” as the default plan. I just need to be able to charge all new sign ups, PLUS all of the default level members of my site at the time of their first log in after the plan is introduced.

I have already separated all contributing members of my site into their own level. Why can’t we choose which levels of membership we target for billing?

Why can’t we bill our users in a simple, straightforward way like a normal pay site?

Please help me with this if possible.

If we could turn back the clock, we would definitely switch to jQuery. Unfortunately, it’s a bit too late for SE4 since so many customizations and third-party mods rely on the current system with mootools. We are now using jQuery in SE5.

Ok interesting. Can you explain more? Would you define the question in the admin panel, and would it be some kind of basic arithmetic question?

I’m still not sure this is secure. Most of the spam issues we’ve seen aren’t actually coming from bots, but rather from farms of people paid to break captchas (usually from China/Russia).

Is anybody else getting parse errors in the language file, even on lines that are properly formatted (no special characters)? I keep getting errors and they are very erratic, no rhyme or reason, I get them on different lines for no apparent reason. I downloaded the latest version to my test site two days ago and those language errors are becoming a nightmare. So I have to disable converting the language files into arrays in order for the site to stay up:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting ‘)’ in /home/user/public_html/test/application/languages/en/en.php on line 3559

would be nice to see better search options on members, ie one being a proximity search on members so you could find people within say 5miles of such such location, a pull down tab so choose country, then county etc but be world wide. this would also be nice to see on signup of se4, when users create account they fill in where they live, but if there spelling is incorrect or they put town instead of county, it messes it up. so be nice for that to be fixed

Mods have been very active on a lot of the other things, but this gets skipped? Making money is a good reason for having this software and doing all the work necessary to maintain a viable community environment. It seems like this would be as simple a tweak as any of the other issues mentioned here and it could really help some clients. It’s not like the cash register isn’t an important part of the business.

The most important for us is a change in security-architecture.
Having to “switch PHP Safe mode off” is operating at risk to say the least. To work around this we installed separate security & monitoring features on the server. Needles to say this is a lot of extra expense and work because the basic PHP programming has not taken this into account.

One feature that I haven’t seen others ask for – and perhaps because its already there and I don’t know how to access it- is about Networks. As far as I can tell, there seems no great use of Networks. I am unable to message my Network alone, email my Network alone, invite my Network alone to Chats, Groups and Forum Topics. You see in a school, each Grade is thought of as a Network and we are unable to use Networks for anything whereas we need to do so many things within each Network. Can someone throw some light on this please? Beat product btw, big fans.

I don’t see much use for networks at all in the default build. I see a huge gap there. I believe users should be able to communicate with their networks (messaging, inviting, emailing etc). Networks must be able to use forums for their specific needs, networks can have groups of their own, networks can be separate from friends not necessarily included with friends.
