SocialEngine Blog

SocialEngine is the best way to create a unique community website. Let your friends, fans or customers geek out about anything you want.

SE Cloud is now mobile friendly!

We’ve heard from a ton of SocialEngine Cloud site builders that our biggest feature gap is proper support for mobile browsers. That’s not surprising since we now see that at least 12% of all traffic on the SE Cloud network is coming from mobile devices (9% iOS, 3% Android). We are also seeing that bounce rates from mobile visitors are 10-20% higher than average, which again isn’t surprising since many pages were simply not rendering properly on mobile. Unacceptable!

I’m excited to say that as of today, SE Cloud is now mobile friendly. Every old and new community in the SE Cloud network should now work quite well in mobile browsers. If you want to customize the theme, there are currently two ways to go about it. A) you can add your own CSS on the Custom CSS page in your admin panel, or B) you can create your own stylesheet, upload it using the Media Manager, and reference it in your Site Header template in the Page Templates section for your admin panel. I know these aren’t 100% convenient for everyone, so we are working on making it easier to include custom CSS (including mobile CSS) in your theme right from the Page Templates area.

Let us know what you think about the mobile theme. This is the first release and there are bound to be some rough edges that need smoothing. Tell us when you find them, and let us know how we can make it better!

A few things to note:

1. Photo quality on mobile may not be 100% crisp, especially for low-res photos. We’ll improve this in the next cycle.
2. If you want to add HTML in your templates that only display on mobile, use the CSS class: .mobile
3. If you want to hide HTML in your templates from mobile (like a custom HTML header, etc.) then add your styles to your Custom CSS (in your admin panel) and wrap them in this: @media only screen and (max-device-width: 480px) { }

On September 27, 2012 you wrote “Expect an announcement post from us next week that will outline our 4.2.8 release goals featuring items we’ve gathered”
Did I miss the announcement I can’t find it anywhere?

I really want to get the SE Cloud but I live in a country that international internet connection is slow and unstable. It would be nice if we can get full access of SE cloud just like the php..

Hi there. Curious to know more – how does your slow internet connection make SE Cloud unusable for you? It’s actually a bit faster than SE PHP on average.

Would you like to upload multiple photos so that you’ll be able to create albums?

  11. Posted October 22, 2012 at 11:23 pm | Permalink

Hi, Our international internet connection is like 10x slower during peak hours so any website that is hosted outside the country loads really slow. And most of the ppl don’t have premium internet plan so yeah..

that would be a very welcome idea. Uploading multiple photos to be able to create and album. Kindly look into that.

@abenzer:disqus – very very simple question. Please kindly answer.

Are you interested in doing advance upgrade in SE PHP? Please answer in YES or NO.

If your are wondering what is ” Advance Upgrade ” That I am taking about than its the time we spent on writing you long email via ur survey. Thats a good place to start looking for features we want.

i think this is simple as this math.

    1 + 1 = 2.

I do not know what all these haters are complaining about. I have been using PHP SE since 2009 and I am extremely happy. It’s about marketing what you have. Make you all a deal I will give you 10 bucks a piece for all those licenses that you all are willing to throw away. This way you can get something for the effort this team has provided and they can stop the constant complaining. Seriously if you spent as much time marketing what you have as you do complaining about what you don’t have you might actually experience some success.

Bill Van Orden – call me when you want out.
