Hello SocialEngine fans! With the help of everyone who participated in our survey and left comments on our blog, we are well under way into the development of version 4.2.8, scheduled for release on 31st October, 2012. The upgrade will be available to download from the client login area at that time. Below is a list of the top improvements chosen by the SE community that will be included in the next release.

  • TINYMCE Editor – streamlined across each plugin and added to Forum Topic Quick Reply, Group Discussion Post Topic Create, Group Discussion Post Edit, Group Discussion Post Reply, Event Discussion Post Topic Create, Event Discussion Post Edit, and Event Discussion Post Reply
  • Optimized Activity Feed – improved activity feed options in admin panel. Enhanced like/commenting. Additions include “View Last” and “View First” pagination, automatic refresh when a new item is posted, and member names for shared items.
  • Bug fixes – include allowing event members to delete posted photos, and group owners to delete member posts.

I look forward to the new release!

What security is there to prevent hackers from hacking into the site and destroying it from within?

Also, are there ways to prevent spammers and spamming bots from joining and posting with dozens or hundreds of profiles a day?

I ask because this happened to my first SE site back in 2009, and I had to fight spammers all day and could not keep up with them deleting accounts and banning IPs, they were building more accounts than I could delete and using many IPs to register. Then my site was hacked, the admin was taken over by the hackers and destroyed my site from within and I had no control over my own site, eventually I had to take the site off-line and I have not started a new site yet. This site had hundreds of members and they were active and I worked on promoting the site a great deal so it was very unfortunate to say the least.

I want to start a new SE site but I am afraid of security issues and repeating what happened the first time.

Following the number of likes of Discus I thought the most requested feature among others for the upcoming releases were clearly API. I spent my time answering the survey you sent, but we did not get the results for it. My question is clear: Are you going to include an API in SE4?

It seems more and more site owners are growing frustrated with this platform. Social Engine really needs to develop something substantial before putting out these lame updates that don’t really make a difference. I have such a large investment in this crap that I have no choice but to go along with it. Not to mention we have added so many 3rd party plugins that should be standard in a social network engine. The end result is that the plugins have slowed our site down immensely. Work on making this code faster! Protect us from hackers!

Mobile photo share, improved email to all members to include reminder messages for Unread PMs, unread member connection request reminders, unread event invite reminder..I cannot emphasize enough to include reminder messages embedded in “email all members” function.

I must agree with many of the below comments. SE PHP needs a core fix when it comes to speed and stability. Unless this is achieved, the small updates won’t satisfy your clients. Your clients (us) are looking for a properly functional, secure and dependable script which SE PHP at present is not. I would add that I IPB and Xenforo are scripts that we have found to be properly functional, secure and dependable. I really believe it should be a reachable goal for SE too.

Social Engine Team, you made it sound like something big was going to happen and I was really hoping for that to happen, but these are no “mayor” updates in my opinion, they are important don’t get me wrong but it seems quite depressing after all the feedback we shared with you guys and after you acknowledged our wishes. If it takes you guys more then a month for this update, I start to wonder how much effort you put into SE PHP these days and how long it will take before an App Center / API and many other requests will be available…. if ever to be available.

What also got to my attention is that ever since SE Clouds announcement, the number of new third party plugins for PHP SE seems to be dropping, I’m guessing because of uncertainty.

My advice: now that your new baby “SE Cloud” has been born and is ready to walk on it’s own, it’s time to take better care of your first born “SE PHP” again because it’s crying for help. PHP SE is still in puberty and really wants to be a full grown, show off to others and live to it’s potential so mam and dad can be very proud one day soon.

  18. Posted October 23, 2012 at 10:53 am | Permalink

what about one step ajax registration instead of 5 or “n” steps… when you enter something wrong at last step, you have start again from the beginning. that is bad.. search functionality is bad. when you want to send message you can’t use arrow keys to type someones name, layout for settings, edit profile questions, /members? api? chat is still showing 100 people online when there are none.. what about other currencies? seo friendly urls?

    so many questions here…

Well that’s a lot of positive messages (not!). I’m not a big fan of the SE move to a separate cloud platform, but with all this negative comments I can’t blame the SE guys for wanting to move away from it. SE4 is a great platform – it’s good value for money – and we need to get behind it!

I hope there is more? This isn’t really much of an update ….TinyMCE should have been that way the whole time and should have just been updated via incremental updates..

What kind of enhanced ‘like’ and commenting? Can we publish them to social feeds?
What else is being updated in 4.2.8? Improved/More layout options? Community Albums? Disqus integration? Social Sharing? Photo importing from Social Sites? Mobile Uploading??? Better Search?

Alex is still a kid.. He is playing game with us. Until now in my life of 24 years I have never ever ever ever seen such a retard person. I have been into SE for last 4 years. They promise ***HUGE*** and later brings out such less than what they promise. Its good to be stubborn.. but when you promise things to customer then you have to deliver it. SE PHP 4.2.8 – I thought was a great release and with all feed back they sent.. i as well thought it would be great. But look at ALEX .. that not even an upgrade..

@ALEX – ” please ” if you DONT have interests in SE PHP in upgrading it… then ” KINDLY ” let every one know.. CASE CLOSED. We will seee what SE COULD has to offer us. But this attitude definitely sucks. Your attitude is makin our level of patience low.. we have had enough of your silly game. I really dont understand why you dont clearly state what your plans !…

My question is clear. Are you interested in SE PHP upgrades (quick advance upgrade) and all features the customers asked in survey…IF NO then just let us know. We will support you with SE CLOUD. Promise.!

@Alex & team, this really is not an upgrade compared to the 4.2.7. I want to suggest you take your time and come up with an upgrade with comprehensive features/updates even if it takes you a couple months more. It’s not point to release the same stuff in the name of an upgrade simply to comply with the 2 month time frame upgrades, and fill the blog with news articles that dont really announce anything new. Why should we rush to 4.2.15 instead of taking time to build a real upgrade so when community owners employ resources to upgrade, its for true an upgrade and not patches and bug fixes. In which case then we won’t be advancing, but more like the chameleon walk.

May I suggest you postpone the release schedule of 4.2.8 next week until its actually matures to be called an upgrade (features, functionalities, etc). And there’s no point always talking of bug fixes and patches calling it an upgrade, just come up with a matured upgrade in terms of features, functionalities, etc and bug fixes should be default in such upgrades. Otherwise, whitewashing our faces dont give us good value for our dollars invested. . . . Let’s have a true upgrade in november or so, something that will make community owners feel the SE grows and not stagnated fixing bugs. . .

SE Team, I would like to point out a few bugs (In 4.2.7) that need immediate attention:
    1. Site layout needs to fit in Ipad display. Currently right hadn side gets cut off.
    2. Icon pictures are too small. When enlarged, these pix get corrupted. (Same issue with profile pix as well) I constantantly get complaints from my users on this issue.

    Posted October 24, 2012 at 10:06 am | Permalink

“Is that all?” or “promises, promises” or “I expected more”, well, we
all want more. I for one want the language file to be divided in two:
admin and user. I have asked for it since 2010. This would make
translations a lot better. Keep admin in native language to work around
in the admin area and translate just the user’s part, in 3 or 6
languages, or 200 if needed. WOW! That can sure take a lot of un-made
money! But I can’t complaint like the most.

    I like the SE,
and all that it has accomplished up to date. And above all, that it
still is a one time payment with FREE UPGRADES!

    Not like some of
the scripts and software’s out there that have to be renewed every year,
just to keep the license active, and some do charge for upgrades. Of
    course is all a PREROGATIVE.

The SE team will eventually come
with the big Bang for the now called SE PHP! I hope! In the mean time
lets give them space and time, should we? Just my thoughts.

Yeah I mean I did nothing to the hackers and spammers, I do not see the reason for their attack, maybe it was a competitor threatened by my up and coming site, or maybe the spammers and hackers thought they could make some money or backlinks, but all it did was ruin my site and I had to shut it down. Now a few years later I think I am ready to give it a shot again, but I am not 100% sure.

Well that was the basics of it, it basically crushed my spirit for building a social network with SE. I just have the software sitting in my account collecting dust with most the plugins I bought. I am at glad I did not make an upgrade to have a paying members area, that would have been an even worst nightmare. If SE was more stable and secure I would build a huge social network and buy more licenses but I it is such a waste of time, money, and work to get a social network off the ground getting momentum, just to see it destroyed.

I was hoping by now SE was going to be amazing, but from what I am seeing and hearing from other SE owners it seems like not much has changed over the years. I have to think about this some more before investing in another SE site.

WOW some pretty heavy comments folks. Personally I may be a little wet behind the ears but I think SE is great. I have built a great site yes with some outside help but I think its FAB so well done Folks. I would ask for one addition and its on the FORUM. I have created Forum Topics in this case Forex Currency Pairs – So I enter the currency discussion Topic area and then I have a list of Currency Pairs to discuss and post in detail. The gripe is you can at this point hit “Last Post” and be taken to it but if you just enter the topic area you can not go to the “Last Post” you need to come out or keep hitting NEXT. This is a real and simple thing to resolve unless It has and I am talking Crap lol. So in essence a “LAST POST” button at every turn would be great…………

    SE, We need the following;

    1. Better share options for capture of our site to other social networks along with showing the original content of the original user posting, our social networking site on to other networks to have traffic redirected to our site.

    2. Sharing to feed, groups, other plugins we should be entitled to have the same share ajax option as shown in SE Cloud with ajax pop up with tabs and area’s to post it in.

    2. I am not a big fan of TINYMCE Editor, how about a normal comment box such as this one in this thread? you can do paragraphs, the box expands out, attach a url, images, etc. Not sure My Disqus is the answer but a similar format. This should be applied everywhere.

    3. AJAX AJAX AJAX, ajax for notification mini bar, notification page, signup page, tab flyouts, section of site pages.

    4. People who join your site but are not connected to someone should not be allowed to msg another user if they are not connected. (we did mode through code to apply this).

    5. As far as Optimized Activity feed go are you able to group multiple updates at once? example john doe and 5 others joined movie groups, Jon doe and 10 others commented on Frank Book’s status, etc. Can we manage what posts are priority example rather then showing individual.

    6. Emails for updates around whole site and updates for user, we should have settings for updates for daily, weekly, and monthly. Should be dynamic and properly render in all emails such as microsoft outlook.

    7. API for our sites

    8. Template pages, we should have more options then 9 layouts for site layout admin. We need some uniqueness to be applied to certain pages.

Mr. Drew Frey, it’s been over a month since we heard from you about updating our site from 4.2.6 to 4.2.7. I have read every last comment on the 4.2.7 announcement and wondering… Is anyone on the SocialEngine Team even listening to your customers… (us)??

WE have real needs and legitimate issues here! But it seems that we are being ignored. I, for one personally HATE complaining about anything that I can’t change. But being ignored is the ultimate sign of disrespect for any business relationship. Drew, SE Team as you already know, many of us are “heavily invested” in SE4. I highly urge you guys to stop ignoring customer needs. It’s not good ethics to answer only selective comments. What matters the most is results. And in my opinion, you have not met many of them. Drew after 30 days, we’re still waiting on that update!

Hey, @hifidev:disqus. Sorry to hear you’re feeling ignored. What’s going on exactly? Upgrades are completely optional, and if you’d like us to assist you directly you’ll need to have support time or purchase an upgrade ticket. These are standard procedures for receiving technical assistance. Otherwise, we are releasing 4.2.8 by the end of the month if you’d to wait and see if that upgrade is successful or not for you.

Very simplest request with no feedback from SE – Many of us want offline payment option for payment gateway………
I have also asked on few occasions for SE team to provide us with their server setup for SE4 all response I keep getting is to log a dam support ticket at a cost. I do not need your support as it sucks,

i do need your server setup configs etc so that I can match my server 100% exactly the same as yours so that you can stop telling me that its my servers fault that se does not work correctly.

Your server requirements you state on this site are useless as it does not give details, it seems like you purposefully do not give the full requirements so that you have an excuse for your code not working.

@freydrew:disqus I don’t understand if your are making a real question or just being sarcastic. If you follow the survey you sent us and our disquos answers, is clear what users are asking. Re-asking again what features we like to be added sounds no serious.

  71. Posted October 26, 2012 at 4:42 am | Permalink

Still awaiting an answer for a clear question. I think previous patch were all good intentions from socialengine team to calm down people about SE4 PHP/SE4 Cloud dilemma. Not answering this, is same as “no, you won’t get it”. But no, I am not going to go to SE4 Cloud if that is what we are going to be forced by not attending customers demands.

The Abuse reports on php needs a revamp. We don’t even know the users name, when you dismiss and ban the user, the screen doesn’t refresh to take them off. Perhaps, once you report someone, their access gets limited to Guest access when though they get logged in. This way, they can’t spam the site any more?

What are the plans to revamp the ad campaigns to control the ads, not the campaigns? This feature is backwards…

Guys! It’s not just me who is “feeling ignored” but a whole group of people “real customers”!!. Drew Frey has not resulted to a “support” email sent in over a month. That is a “fact” not a “feeling” sir!! If Drew only work in answering customer support tickets, he should state just. This type of “support” is not fair to any customer. Read through the comments and you will see for yourself. Instead of replying to complaints maybe someone can look into resolving some of these issues?
Matt, please do not try to single me out and pretend this is one single incident. As I would be one of the last to want to complain about an issue to this degree. But this is totally unacceptable.

  76. Posted October 26, 2012 at 2:06 pm | Permalink

@hifidev:disqus Thanks for sharing your concerns. We have not ignored you intentionally, and from what I can see we’ve replied to your emails. Please contact us directly to discuss this further, as our team has explained to you in the emails you submitted that support time is necessary if you’d like our technicians to assist you with resolving these upgrade issues. Upgrading to 4.2.7 should be successful, so you need support time for us troubleshoot your installation for you.

Sorry for the confusion. I am being completely sincere. We really appreciate you taking some extra time filling out the survey and are implementing some of the feature requests in the upcoming release of 4.2.8.

    Hello Drew Frey

Thank you very much for your kind reply and your open and friendly words!

I’d really like to see an API for SE PHP – like many others I think.

If you don’t want to include it within the core you can also release it as a plugin – this way you can also get some money out of it. But please give us a secure, key protected json/xml api for socialengine php.

    besides that some other suggestions:

    – Groups / Albums / Events (…) of my Friends page on the browse pages, because the content people are most interested in is the content created by their friends

    – possibility to create seperate pages in profile for i.e. my fotos, my groups (…) instead of tabs in profile

    – improved ajax signup with step indicator

Also the suggestions in the roadmap sound very good – if they will be realized?!

    Thank you very much!

AWESOME and FINALLY! Those are great changes!

  81. Posted October 28, 2012 at 5:36 pm | Permalink

Dan, I have no idea how busy your site is, but my site is extremely busy – with tons of comments posted in the blogs and forums and these things are HUGE problems for my members. They’re pretty much deal breakers for a LOT of people. If you have a busy site and care about the end user’s experience – these improvements are absolutely vital.

And a lot of SE owners have been begging SE to stop developing new features until they get these very basic things fixed. I’m very happy to see them finally getting to these things.

  82. Posted October 28, 2012 at 5:48 pm | Permalink

I installed APC a while back and there wasn’t a bit of difference in speed AND it messed up everything else on the server! Because it removes all “owners” from all other websites. Therefore if you have any other sites on the server for instance a WordPress site – you can’t do automatic updates, because WordPress no longer recognizes the owner of the files and folders and it can’t update anything.

I removed APC because it wasn’t worth it in light of all those other problems it caused. So be glad you don’t know how to install it! You saved yourself a bunch of trouble for nothing!

  83. Posted October 28, 2012 at 5:49 pm | Permalink

Simon these are basic features that should have been working a long time ago. I’m happy as can be they’re finally getting around to fixing all these things that annoy end users to death! Your users are going to be much happier with these things fixed.

Fixing the activity feed IS major. Making TinyMCE consistent throughout the site IS major! Maybe you don’t have enough users to have noticed that these things are huge problems. But believe me, if you have thousands of users you’ll get nothing but complaints from them about these things.

  84. Posted October 28, 2012 at 5:53 pm | Permalink

Amando, did it ever occur to you that perhaps not all SE owners had the same responses to the survey that you did?

I hope you will have fixed the ordering of the “Login History” columns. “changeOrder()” is not defined, but it is applied to the onclick events or each column header. We’re trying to develop our site still and even though we haven’t tried to promote our site, I’ve had to disable blogs for the default level & sorting through the login history to ban IPs & email domains is bad enough, but even more irritating when I can’t even order the columns to find correlations.

And the “highlights” you’ve listed don’t sound as if they’ll really matter. The constant page loads for just about EVERY action is antiquated. The site feels like it was built 8 or 9 years ago.

To start with, the option to copy/paste is a must… Save History, an option similar to cometservice, I wouldnt mind paying a monthly fee which I pay to them now… emoticons would be nice too. the problem cometservice has is when a user logs in from more than one device, user may lose messages.. (just for consideration if you ever add a similar feature).

Hello, thanks for the answer! I am not sure why you are asking me about what major social network I am thinking. Using your new SocialEngine Cloud I noticed that you have introduced this new feature “Get Our Share Button”, which is a bookmarklet. I have looking for this feature for a long while for my community! It would be great if you can make the effort to introduce this feature to SocialEngine PHP as well. I do not know for the other, but I would be extremely glad to let my users use it.

ok so now we 4.2.8 update and what has it done ?… Several major addons now fail to function, commenting is totally screwed up as is the live feed and view more functions ! I don’t know if this is your idea of a joke or your just being too smart for your own good but i now have a very disgruntled membership and my whole business is on the line and i am betting i am not alone, isn’t it about time you returned some of the loyalty myself and others here have shown you over the years and just for once put out an update that doesn’t screw us over one that actually improves our sites instead of destroying them or will it take a class action in the courts to convince you that you have a duty of care and can be liable for any financial losses we suffer as a result of your close enough is good enough attitude.

Ok, as someone looking to start a site on SE, the comments about lack of support scare the begeezers out of me. I looked at SE a while ago when it was still young and went with Boonex. That was a complete nightmare! People were dying for support for their buggy software. It was common for people’s sites to be down for days until someone answered their support tickets. They would then upgrade to a new version without attempting to fix any bugs on the previous. It was just horrible and I do not want to go through that again. I moved to Ning. They are rock solid in support and platform and couldn’t be happier but for my next site, I need some features and customizations that they do not offer so I came here. I know a few sites using SE and they look great and have the functionality I am looking for.

Is this a stable platform for a 30,000+ member site? I also cannot find any info on the cloud platform other than the price. I would appreciate any input!
