Happy New Year! New SE Cloud Theme + SE PHP Patch

Hey all. I know it’s been a month since our last update on this blog. Between the holidays and a significant restructuring here at SocialEngine, most of the month was knocked out. But now we’re ready to rock. We’ve been heads-down building through December and have some good things for you.

SE Cloud

We’ve been collecting a ton of feedback from Cloud site creators, which has been guiding our development on the new platform. Later this week, we’ll be pushing a major update that, among other things, will include:

  • An entirely new activity feed-style theme (a la Yammer or Facebook). We believe this theme will work better for smaller/newer communities that have yet to accumulate a lot of content.
  • Major improvements to the SE Cloud theme system. You’ll now be able to preview and revert individual templates. We’ve also added new parameters to some of the existing widgets.
  • Phase II of our API, including a few new objects.
  • A new inline composer widget (instead of just the modal-based composer we currently have).
  • Sharper images in post feeds.

Release announcement to come in a few days.

SE PHP

We obviously know there’s been a bit of an uproar in the SE PHP community since we’ve been putting more energy into developing Cloud. Unfortunately, since thousands of third-party addons and themes now rely on the current PHP codebase, there isn’t a whole lot we can do to continue iterating on the platform in a meaningful way – aside from making what comes out of the box work as well as it possibly can. Our immediate goal for SE PHP is to iron out any remaining bugs in the existing codebase and to make the platform as absolutely stable as possible. We are releasing a patch (announcement to come very shortly) that will resolve the outstanding bugs in SE PHP. Please, help us accomplish this goal by commenting with your constructive feedback about what’s not working right for you in SE PHP. The more specific you can be, the better. We’ll do our best to answer every constructive comment below.

Thanks everyone. Here’s to a bright & social 2013!

Hi, SE Team and Happy New Year!
On my site immediately start this problem: Mails not send ?!
    I checked
    1) Changed to SMTP (Not Help)
    2) in Task scheduler – changed from cURL to java (Not Help),cron(Not Help)

But when I not use email que, but instant sending – all work Ok (Mails send)…Only if I use email que, mails not sending

Please SE Team I need your help, I think problem on task scheduler.

    • sebas77

Shalom, please understand that SE can fix only bugs that are reproducible to everyone and on their demo as well. For example I do not have any problem sending e-mail with the queue system, so it is really likely a problem with your site configuration.

  • blizzerdz

I cant wait for the sec update, I am working on themes and mods, but cant finish all of them up before this update.. Hope it comes sooner rather then later

  • http://www.facebook.com/magisterventrue Magister Frost

Please make sure all items show up in the feed as they should. I still have never been able to get new Group Posts, or New Forum Posts to show up in the main feed except for the user who posted it … The feed permissions need some major work … it is an extremely important part of a community. I have submitted bug reports on this multiple times for a long time now with no resolution!

    • sebas77

while I do not have any problem with those feeds, I agree that the feed system needs a major rework

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1507208140 Bale Zeninho

I am also having this issue so it’s not isolated. please fix!

      • http://www.socialengine.com/ SocialEngine

OK – I’ve backlogged that bug and we’ll look into it right away!

  • sebas77

dear SE developers, we already all know the solution. If you really care about your unsatisfied customers, leave the source code open source! Give us the tools to let the community fix bugs or even add features. Thanks for listening!

  • sebas77

Dear SE devs, it would be REALLY useful if you could let us register on the new SE PHP demo, if we can’t we could not prove to you that the bugs are reproducible on your site as well. Please advise us.

  • Nick Swartz

    Happy New Year Webligo.

Can’t wait for the update of SE4 PHP. I hope CSS is added to all profile pages, It would be a nice touch.

    • http://www.socialengine.com/ SocialEngine

Thanks Nick – we just released a patch today – check your client dashboard!

  • sebas77

I have several bugs to report that I am sure can be reproduced on your web site as well….how can I report them?

  • Jazzman

I’m still on version 4.2.7, keep getting this parse error when trying to access the theme editor, not sure if it has been fixed but I’m adding it nonetheless. Even if I comment out that line of code, it keeps on happening on the next theme:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_RETURN in /home/user/public_html/application/themes/grid-gray/manifest.php on line 1

    • http://www.socialengine.com/ Matthew

This can easily be fixed by reinstalling your themes. You can download your theme packages here: http://support.socialengine.com/questions/215/Updating-Themes

    • http://www.socialengine.com/ SocialEngine

Have you made any changes to the source code? We can’t replicate this issue.

  • Osei

sot his mean se php wont get the api :(

    • http://www.socialengine.com/ SocialEngine

Not necessarily. We’d like to discuss the API – but there are significant challenges. Blog post forthcoming.

  • Ryan Olson

    So Alex,

Are you telling your community who has spent thousands of dollars on your system that you are basically done making it better and adding new features to SE PHP? If that is the case can I suggest you give all of us 25% back because when bought SE PHP we were investing in the product, not in your cloud project. Some of us have been waiting months, even years for you to actually take SE to the next level for both small and large communities.

At this time we have all asked for an API, which you gave to cloud, but left PHP in the dust. We have been asking for the ability to customize more of how the system handles various tasks, which you GLADLY took over to cloud. You fix one bug but break 2 more things, then leave us over Christmas high and dry. People have been posting on your previous ads about all the problems and you have the nerve to ask us AGAIN to tell you what the problems are?!?!?!?

Let me offer you some suggestions that I am SURE the rest of your PHP customers will agree upon.

    1. Give us the API WE ALL NEED!!!!

    2. STOP BRAGGING ABOUT CLOUD SO MUCH AND SHOW THE INVESTMENT WE ALL MADE INTO PHP IS VALID.

    3. TAKE THE TIME TO ACTUALLY FIX THE PROBLEMS YOU PROMISE TO FIX AND ACTUALLY TEST IT FIRST. I AM SURE SOME OF US WOULD BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO GIVE YOU ACCESS TO OUR DEV SERVERS IF YOU WANT SOME REAL WORLD TESTING.

    4. STOP BLAMING EVERY PROBLEM ON 3RD PARTY DEVELOPERS. YOU PROMOTE THEM (HIRE-EXPERTS, RADCODES, ETC) BUT WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG, YOU BLAME THEM.

    5. YOUR OWN SUPPORT PEOPLE AGREE WITH THIS ONE… IF YOU WANT TO CHARGE US FOR SUPPORT, THEN CHARGE US. I AM SURE SOME OF US WOULD MORE THAN AGREE, 50$ IS A STEAL, BUT WE WANT REAL SUPPORT, NOT CRAP. SO SOME OF US WOULD BE WILLING TO PAY A PREMIUM AS OUR BUSINESS IS BUILT ON SE

    6. MAKE SURE YOU LISTEN TO THIS ONE… WE ALL HAVE FEATURES WE “WANT” BUT THE ONES WE NEED HAVE BEEN TOLD TO YOU MORE AND MORE. STABILITY, EASE OF USE, ADMIN IMPROVEMENTS, PERFORMANCE ISSUES, API, MAIL ISSUES, AND THE LIST GOES ON. NONE OF US GIVE A FLYING RIP ABOUT YOUR CLOUD PROJECT ANYMORE (AND SOME OF US CANT USE IT).

    7. SPEND SOME TIME AND OFFER CERTAIN DEVELOPERS “ADVANCED” OR “PREMIUM” STATUS. PEOPLE PAY YOU TO VERIFY THEIR CODE AND GET THAT STATUS SO PEOPLE LIKE US KNOW YOU WONT BLAME THEM FOR BAD CODE. LETS FACE IT, APPLE DOES IT, MICROSOFT DOES IT, WHY CANT YOU?

Please Alex and Char, we are asking you to remember the people who invested into you, the people who went and took a chance on your company before you went off onto your “play projects” like SE Cloud and your other businesses. I cannot express to you enough to take care of us. All you are doing is burning bridges.

    • kelvin

      Well said brother….

      • Ryan Olson

Well someone had to say it?!?!

    • SolutionResponse

      I agree 1000%!

    • Ret Branche

wow 1000% agree with you bro. I have invested $30,000+ on my project up to now http://www.RetBranche.com if they could give me what you say I would be sooooooooo happy. $50 usd/month for REAL support I would gladly pay, but I will not pay even $0.00001 for crap support, even free I do not want.

I would be more than happy to give access to my dev site for bug searching and fixing. speed improvement etc,

    • http://www.socialengine.com/ SocialEngine

Ryan. I hear you and understand where you’re coming from. We are also frustrated that we can’t put more energy into SE PHP. I’m sorry we’ve let you down.

Truthfully, we really don’t have the resources to throw at the 10,000 different feature requests – and as we add more code, we are seeing more negative interactions with third-party mods. This is one major reason we launched Cloud. Also, the general demand for self-hosted products is declining, and we need to focus on building an amazing SaaS to keep moving forward.

I understand that you’ve made an investment by purchasing a SE PHP license, and it’s frustrating that we are putting development energy into our newer product. But please understand – we are a very small team – we are not Apple or Microsoft – and we’re doing the best we can to help people build the best online communities they can. Ultimately, piling more and more code on SE PHP is going to keep slowing down our ability to make SE PHP a cleaner, faster machine. The codebase already has a major footprint and while we’ve spent a lot of time looking at how we can trim it down, there’s no obvious path.

What I am hearing is that an SE PHP API is the most demanded missing feature on the platform. I’m going to post a blog entry in a few days so we can get a discussion going about how we can best implement that. My main concern there is that offering up a REST API and making it scalable is not a trivial task. We already see many SE PHP customers hosting their sites on very low end servers and expecting perfect performance – these won’t scale well if they are hosting their own REST APIs. Again, this is another reason we are pushing forward with Cloud (and building an API for that platform).

SE Cloud is definitely not a “play project”. It is the best way we can help people create active, vibrant online communities. We can make improvements and add new features 10X faster with SaaS. There will always be some demand for a self-hosted option, which is why we are doing all we can to make SE PHP the best it can be as-is. I hope that makes sense.

  • Molecular

Everyone has been talking about API. There is a lot you can do to satisfy many of us site owners. API this is what many are waiting for. There is more to just bug fixes. Can you guys just do that instead of relying on third party developer. After all, it is your product.

    • http://www.socialengine.com/ SocialEngine

OK. I hear you. Our main concern is that many SE PHP instances aren’t hosted on servers that will fare well if they have significant API traffic. Blog post about this forthcoming – we’d like to talk about it more.

This is becoming painful happy new year? Social engine we need help come on i bought this product cause it showed promise whats going on here i spent to much money to be left to the dogs, the whole community dont like the way you not finding ways to improve the original project one project needs to be handed to your team then the other to another team we are way to invested dont lets us down PLEEEEES!!!

    3 problems,
    1) Dev mode doesn’t work after the .9 update,CSS doesn’t display, a few others have metioned it also.
    2) You can’t upload photos to a user wall anymore unless you’re using Chrome only
Many people mentioned this after the .8 update.
    3) you can upload a photo, link, or video to a user wall via mobile.

Appreciate the feature request – you’re welcome to add some more notification types to the code yourself in the meantime!

Bug #1 Social Engine does not allow to edit discussion posted on an Event. I will send more bugs when this message will become visible.

What Sandy Volunteer said. We are a potential buyer for a new police/civilian platform, please handle the Hurricane Sandy Volunteer teams issues first.

Messages are really ugly for SE PHP, they need more improvements! You can not use arrow keys for choosing contacts, layout and feel when you message is so oldschool, when you click enter you get 40px space and so on.. i think that you need to look how facebook did their job on messages – press enter to send, ajax loading, everything is so fast and smooth, possibility to add files, keyboard shortcuts, you can even send mail (this is so cool).. These are all details for good developers, nothing special, nothing you can’t do if you put energy into it. Question is do you want to do that?

  • Tuan Trieu Thanh

Please make SE PHP is “lighter”. I try to access to lots of SE PHP sites and most of them loading forever!

    • http://www.socialengine.com/ SocialEngine

With the right server config, you should be in good shape. Have you checked the system requirements?

  • freddy24

What happened to the “Road Map” you wrote about in this post: http://www.socialengine.com/blog/2012/08/30/se4-roadmap-planning-ahead/

I don’t see half these features in the latest (4.2.9)… All we got were more bugs!

Why is webligo run like this?

Will SEphp become the way of your other software – BlogHoster?
I purchased that heap of rubbish because you promised a major update almost three years ago! And I’m still waiting for that update?!
Your website still advertises that a major update is coming (even though it’s 3 years late!) – http://www.bloghoster.net/

You guys just go from one project to another without finishing anything – and you want our loyalty???!

    • http://www.socialengine.com/ SocialEngine

We would love to hit every last item on that roadmap. Unfortunately, demand for self-hosted community software is gradually declining and we don’t have the resources we need to hit everything on the plan. We are doing our best – I’m sorry we’ve let you down on this.
