New “Clean” Theme + Disqus + Other Improvements

We are getting a TON of feedback from the 600 site creators now active on SocialEngine Cloud. One common issue we’ve seen is that newly created and small communities often have a hard time getting enough engagement – especially commenting and discussions – to get off the ground. We found that the two default SE Cloud themes, Board and Stream, emphasize post titles and thumbnails while visually burying comments. While that’s OK for certain types of communities, it’s not ideal if you’re just getting started and really want to encourage conversations between members.

We built a new “Clean” theme to solve this problem. It features an activity feed (more reminiscent of SE PHP) as the main focus on the What’s New page, while other pages have Board-style post feeds. This activity feed has more noticeable commenting call-to-actions that we think will encourage your members to engage more fluidly. If you’re already building your community on SE Cloud or thinking about trying it out, we definitely encourage you to take a look. It’s also possible to take some styles from the Clean theme and merge them into another theme to create a combined layout.

We’ve also rolled out some other improvements including:

  • You can now preview themes before activating them.
  • You can now revert individual templates without reverting the whole theme.
  • You can now replace the native commenting system with Disqus if needed.
  • Quite a few bug fixes, mostly small visual issues.
  • Digest emails should now be sending on schedule.

Let us know what you think about the new theme. We know it’s pretty basic at this point and there’s plenty of room for improvement – so that’s what we are doing! First we’ll focus on building a more robust post composer (the “Share something…” box at the top of the activity feed) that includes better support for attaching photos and other media.

    Alex,

Theme looks good, also the improvements are great like “replace the native commenting system with Disqus” this has been requested for SE PHP as well, I like to see that. Overall nice clean template and now that you have 600 site creators in the Cloud x 39$ do the math, SE is doing very well on top of selling the PHP licences. I see an opportunity to invest in SE PHP to hire some new solid staff members to satisfy your client base am I right?

I’m very happy for you and the whole SE team I really am, now make us happy to I know you guys can. I know I’m going a little off topic but I just need to get your attention and I will keep doing it till I finaly see some major improvements that we have been asking for in many blog postings. Can you also have yourself or have at least someone reply someting constructive to some of the comments in previous blogs. In particular the comment of Eugene (WebHive team), I like to know your thoughts on that.

      holders be damned.

    • Carlos Roman

Andre, I don’t believe SE PHP is dead, but I am sure pro’s will step-in to support it.

You guys should have hired me. I could have told you all this a long time ago!

We really love this new theme! It combines the best bits of the board and stream layouts, you have the flexible categories and it just zooms along! It’s great! It’s a perfect start for a small newbie site like ours and just the thing we’ve been waiting for. And Comet have just added chat for SE Cloud too which is good.

We tried another well known provider before SE Cloud and we just couldn’t get excited about them at all (our site looked dated and just chugged along, support took at least 2 days if you was lucky.) SE Cloud is a great product, it’s just absolutely miles better and the support is great too.

We’re trying to figure this out … the drop down menu “Everything” we need to move up the page a bit or something, because if we have more categories you can’t see them all (they dissapear under the bottom of the taskbar.) So how to sort that?

Also if you share say a Youtube video in “What’s New” then the title becomes a link out to Youtube which takes you by surprise a bit ‘cos you’re not expecting to link out (the same video in “What’s Hot” plays on the page) It’s not a problem – we don’t mind it – but we thought it might be a little confusing for new/inexperienced users.

This is really such a superb effort. We think the SE team deserve an all-expenses paid night out for coming up with this. So Alex – time to get your wallet out!

Good news. I’ll give the software another go.

  • makkkkkkkk

any news on the user/content migration script from php to cloud?

    • Tomasz Stachurski

      This is an important question.
The second is how it is with the function of translation?
I once tested as a cloud could translate something but not everything and this is not acceptable.

will you still release SE PHP 4.3?

  • Renaldo Sanchez

    Thanks.

  • sienteasturias

  • Renaldo Sanchez
