Performance Improvements

We know performance is an absolute priority for some of you so we’ve done our best to identify and improve on the bottlenecks we’ve found without creating any compatibility issues for third-party addons. Some of you should see page load speed improvements with SE PHP 4.5, depending on your server config, resource limits and usage levels. We’ll continue to focus on performance improvements with our next SE PHP release. Remember – if you’re having speed issues, please be sure that your site is in Production Mode (you can enable it from your admin panel homepage).

Let us know what you think about SE PHP 4.5. Happy community building!

Just a quick note: The “Twitter OAuth now uses SSL” was not fixed. We still had to use the patch in order for it to work correctly. If anyone needs it you can get it here courtesy of Jung at socialengine developer…

Good to see another update Team keep them coming, I won’t be upgrading right away but I like to hear some feedback from people who see performance improvements or track any bugs. Before anyone asks, how are you doing on the API for SE PHP any progress? Thanks guys.

    • http://drewfrey.com/ Drew Frey

We’ll keep ‘em coming @screent:disqus Thanks! As far as the API, we’re still exploring.

      • Hesborne

@freydrew:disqus Nice to hear this Drew. It makes us proud to be part of the SE fraternity as we build and improve to serve our communities. They deserve amazing services and which SE team is striving to offer. While I encourage your efforts about the up and coming API, please I want to also take this chance to encourage your work on the “Crowdsourced Languages Tool” so our community members can help us with the crowdsourced translations of the sites. Much thnx Drew, Alex and Team, and thumbs and feets up.

      • Hesborne

@freydrew:disqus Thnx for this Drew. It feels great as we improve on the communities for better user experience. When you explore on the API, allow me to also add that you please consider the “Crowdsourced Language Translation” tool/feature for the next upgrade so that members can can help us with the translations into their different local languages. This will also be a huge boost to helping grow our communities. Thnx again.

        • http://drewfrey.com/ Drew Frey

We’ll keep that in mind @hesborne:disqus Thanks!

      • TechNerd

No problems. It’s an awesome upgrade! Well done SE team!!! Just one thing. Why such a big jump in version number (4.3 -> 4.5) without much new features?

  • TechNerd

Just done the upgrade and don’t see the “Modern” theme. Have even activated the default theme and cleared cache etc with no luck :-(

  • antonio

        I get this error.

that is what I have to modify?

    • http://www.socialengine.com/team Jung Ho Kim

xmt.pl is correct! Themes are not part of the upgrade procedure as it could accidentally overwrite changes.

We have updated our theme doc to include the modern theme –

    Hi All,

I encountered a problem during the upgrade, a permission issue indicating that a .htaccess is not writable, see below image. I put many .htaccess files writable, but nothing works and I do not exactly where it is.

    Let me know the solution.

    Have a great week-end.

    • http://www.socialengine.com/team Jung Ho Kim

This sounds like a permissions issue. Make sure your FTP user has the ability to overwrite that file.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=584341473 Guðmundur Jónsson

I have the same issue… how to fix?

      • http://www.SocialEngine.fr/ Bruno

        Hello, sorry for the delay.

I was not able to fix it, I asked here where was the location file, but I got no precise answer.

In my case it is not important, as I apply always new upgrade on testing site and wait one week.

I have several licenses, If it can help you, I had this problem only on a subdomain where I had only younet plugins, do you have any Younet plugin ?

        Have a good day.

    • NetTippser

      I have the same problem.

      .htaccess is not writable.
      robots.txt is not writable.

i try 666, 755, 777 nothing helps. Always the same message. What can i do to fix it?

  • http://www.xmt.pl/ xmt.pl

The “Network” in Admin panle works not! When I clik on the link i have error message. Image attached.

  • antonio

no I’m getting any javascript error in my console

  • http://www.socialengine.com/team Jung Ho Kim

This is not reproducible on my machine. Try putting your site in development mode and you should get a more detailed error message.

  • freddy24

Is there a demo of the new theme anywhere? I see that SE’s version is still 4.2.9

  • cytelink@outlook.com

  • http://www.socialengine.com/team Jung Ho Kim

Anyone looking for the new Modern theme, you can manually download it in the link below! We do not include new themes into upgrade packages as it could overwrite your existing themes.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594050034 Martin Van Den Boogerd

How’s it all working? Upgrade and all or wait for a .px version?

  • http://drewfrey.com/ Drew Frey

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

    • HIFIDEV

Yes. Also Matt Macias is looking into this issue. I sent him images of the footer issue. I think it could be a simple theme.css fix. Thanks

  • http://drewfrey.com/ Drew Frey

What don’t you like about the Modern Theme @disqus_YPZFycTNGQ:disqus ? What would you have us focus more on with the Modern Theme?

Generally speaking that comes from a couple of issues. The biggest thing to check is your php.ini for your max file size

  • Antonio

    how to install it?

  • Mrnight

Hello, i´m glad to see the continues developing of SE PHP. I have an recommendation. You think a lot about the progression and the development of other features. But many more times you should think about the improvement of existing features and modules. How e.g. the create of templates. So we have the same techniques like wordpress, joomla and co. For templating and Modul/Widget Positions and Variations. I think it give a alot of Plugins for SE PHP for each one and each community. for founders of communities, it is not important to have many features. Meaningful and individuality is important. That makes, among other things, the designs. Please think about a technique how we can make better templates and positions of Widgets.

  • thatmtnman

just wanted to add, did some speed/capacity testing on the new release. Its about 66 per cent faster! Its a beautiful thing. Congratulations guys and keep those speed fixes coming! ha!

    • http://drewfrey.com/ Drew Frey

Thanks for the praise @thatmtnman:disqus. Happy to hear that your site is running 66 % faster! Great news.

  • Edward

please make the search more good……hope there will be some updates this month…

    • http://drewfrey.com/ Drew Frey

In your opinion, what search features specifically are we lacking? Thanks for your response @edwardantony:disqus

  • http://twitter.com/DizzybusyMamas Dizzybusy Mamas

I have plug ins by SE developers. Do I need to wait for them to catch up to SE 4.5 to insure no issues with the upgrade? I have been waiting for them for a while to catch up to your pace on a few of my plug ins already.

  • Ryan Olson

My site has grown to the point of not working on a single web server I am now in the process of setting up a master/slave server and a 4-node web cluster. It would be nice if you added support for multiple databases. I have been working with ZF to see how this can be accomplished but I keep hitting dead ends.

Also, do we have a status on a RESTful API for SE PHP?
