Seeking feedback: SocialEngine Mobile Chat App

Hey SE site builders!

One of the product ideas we’ve been kicking around at SocialEngine HQ recently is a mobile chat app. This would let anyone (including those of you who haven’t setup a SocialEngine-powered site yet) create a live messaging mobile app for your site or community. Think something like WhatsApp or GroupMe, but specifically made for your community. You’d be able to customize some aspects of the app’s colors, fonts, logo, and other aspects of its look and feel. We’d help you publish your app to the app store so your members can install it on their mobile devices. You’d be able to design and manage your app from your account here at

We haven’t made the decision to build this yet – at this stage, we’re really just looking to the SocialEngine community to see how many of you would like to have mobile messaging apps to compliment your communities and social sites. Does it sound interesting to you? Let us know what you think!

Perhaps you should spend your time adequately supporting and updating SE PHP? Such as the systemic memory usage issues that crash servers when more than a few dozen members are on a site all at the same time. Perhaps.

There are already a bunch of apps for this. Arrowchat, Cometchat, etc. I used them with my SE PHP site, as they were far better than the out-of-the box chat plugin you provided. Stick to what you do best,

If you allow sharing photos, videos, etc. like whatsapp, improving the work done by the cometchat team, for sure it will be interesting. If you also allow adding adds for certain member levels, then the business is done.

I think it would be good idea to focus on one thing, SE PHP. Then you will be popular for having the best social network CMS. With that chat probably even SE cloud will be forgotten. Thats not right, you need to focus on one think and always make it better. Your practices make me over think if SE is good for me.

I agree with many others. There is no need for a mobile chat app. There are many other design elements that would be firstly useful to help your users make sites that are easily monetized. Here’s a GREAT example.

I would love to add DIFFERENT HEADER HTML for each page on the site without having to go into the code. That would be simple, but completely not considered because many of your users haven’t started using Doubleclick for publishers. (Which they certainly will soon.) I’d have to say optimization of small features like this one would be more helpful. But, in the end this will most likely be ignored because you make money from sales of apps right?

GO with chat I appreciate it, but make sure following points are there in it:

    – It should be integrated properly in Social engine PHP itself apart from separate app.

It’s load can be shifted to another alternative server at same time to
make sure main server don’t get too much load and to avoid crash.

    – It should have smileys, emoticons better or as good as whtsapp, line, wechat and other chatting apps.

    – It should have stickers as other apps.

    – give Voice recording feature as other apps are giving it.

So my point is make sure is it is at least as good as other existing apps.

“Now also make sure u consider following points in SE PHP.”

    – Give option for moving/uploading music/audio on a separate server to reduce its load on main server, also if possible give for albums as well.

smileys/emoticons in complete social engine that is in comments ,
status and in core library. presently they are displaying only in status
updates, so they are of no use. Add photo comments option.

-Also need default signup from G mail/Google, yahoo, Facebook, twitter, linked in.

above 5 services covers all Login/Sign up in themselves.-Last but not least as of know we need API and demanding same from over a year.

Actually, no one wants the API until the memory crashes have been fixed. Don’t want the chat app they are talking about until the memory crashes are fixed. Don’t want new themes, new colors or new anything until we can run more than a few hundred people on an SE php site with out it crashing or slowing down to a glacial crawl.

I strongly agree with this idea, because the development community tends to come more into mobile applications because it is more flexible. I wait for SE mobile applications.

I think besides the few issues with the performance of SE PHP, developing a mobile app would be really great. I second that Ken Keyes. Build a messaging app for social engine, that is light weight and laden with features kind of like the Facebook Messenger app…

Great idea guys. It will be a big plus for my SE PHP community. You can make it to work on cross-platforms like WhatsApp or the new Facebook Messenger to take care of feature phones as well. And please, we are still expecting the API for SE PHP in the next upgrade….keep it rolling….

I think it’s an awesome idea. I use WhatsApp extensively and was pondering the idea of having something similar for my site (SE PHP). That being said, some of my concerns would be things like integration (how would it fit with the rest of my site), technology used (XMPP, etc.) If it will use XMPP, would I be able to use my own server or would I be forced to use something hardcoded somewhere? In other words, I would be interested in knowing what’s under the hood since chat can be very resource intensive, which would mean added cost. The idea is great though, in my humble opinion (an app is one of the most effective ways to push your brand)

JomSocial (a community plugin for Joomla!) have tried to do a separate IM product and have invested a lot in it but after launch they quickly (between 6 months to 1 year) closed the project even though they had a huge client base to which they probably tried to upsell the product. a IM for dating websites has been bought by AOL in 2006 and then died a slow death.

Toksta/Stickapps had the same death but quicker.

i am using it, it works great stable and neat. Only problem is that it does not have any chat like on facebook app. I would like to see a development of a app for android for the socialengine instead of a plugin. but more or less works great now on my android. However I miss a chat option for both messaging short and direct. and for the chatroom as we use social engine primarily for organizing and activism..

It sounds interesting but I think your focus should be improving the actual IM module. It should be integrated with messaging, allow to copy/paste, add at least some emoticons, etc… You may also want to offer a service similar to cometservice which I pay only $9 per month… I would not pay for a SE mobile app unless it’s the real deal, and that means optimizing your current chat.

  36. Posted September 17, 2013 at 7:42 am | Permalink

A mobile chat application should be fast, modern and encompass the basic requirements of a messenger. WhatsApp is very popular because of its simplicity and GroupMe is great with the ability of group messaging. If you look at Facebooks, new mobile messenger with chat heads etc and it also allows you to have group chats.

Therefore for we would recommend that you develop a mobile chat application, that is fast, modern and bears these functionalities improved. You can take a look at these other mobile chat applications and borrow a leaf or two. Mobile is the way to go in this age and this will greatly improve the interactivity on our socialengine sites. Great one SocialEngine Team….

Hey I have already posted, but sharing final points again.

If you are planning to bring new mobile chat app than 5 star and thumbs up for SE team.
Now what me and my team feels important in chat :
+ It should have emoticons/smileys/stickers in it.
+ Fast and option of sharing photos/videos in it.
+ should operate on a separate server to reduce load on main SE php site server, but at the same time should be fully part of SE php only and mobile site too. As comet chat have comet service.

Other features which SE php is ignoring seriously are:
+ Please give smileys/emoticons in comment also.
+ Give tagging people or pages and has tag feature in comment.
+ photo as a comment option.

in fact smileys should be enable in Chat, comment, and basic core of SE php to drive more traffic and keep our user entertained.

Last but not least We require API & requesting same from a more than a year.
option for Need a separate or alternative server to host music/albums files of website.

As it will reduce the load and will make SE php fast.

going with the majority will not give you an answer, its the richest and loudest guys you will hear the most, they already invested in other apps ,so they dont care ,although i agree that SEphp needs more ,i also think an app will be good because it will support all plugins from all companies, make it and let buyers decide.

Respectfully – I don’t get where you are all having memory issues. I will admit I do have some performance issues (/members/home taking 7-9seconds to load) but no memory leaks. I understand how people here buy SE and expect Facebook out of the box, but its not. It is a glorified CMS just like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal that, just like the others, needs to be customized to your needs and factors. When I started with SE, I had 150 users and each of them logged into the site at LEAST once a day. Now I have SE on a 3-node web cluster running a 3-node Tungsten Database Cluster with over 20,000+ users and over 500 people on at any given time. It is all about optimizing what you have and removing what you don’t. Also, the more 3rd party modules you have the slower it will be, so only run what you NEED, and not cause it is cool.

The whole reason I am making a big deal out of it is because tuning a server or a couple of lines of code can be done by almost anyone in the industry with a couple of hours of work. It would be a $200 investment that will save thousands of dollars and the stress. What some of us larger sites need is the API. To create an API from code you didn’t do yourself is painful at best. The SE people know it. In fact, I bet they have a rough copy of it that would help so many of us out so we can develop mobile apps, next-gen push to device notifications, and so much more… But without it, the cost of hiring someone makes it almost cheaper to buy a custom built site from scratch.

I still say, the API should come in the near future, it is desperately needed. Also, what would be really nice is updating Zend (wishful thinking I know). But for the people with memory issues, yes I am sure SE can do some changes to make it better. But it will still not be what you want. You need to get on a server, get a linux/dba/php guy to tune it and clean up slow queries. After that you will be SMOOTH SAILING!

@Keshav you do understand that if you integrate SE into Amazon S3/Cloudfront or any other CDN that offloads the /public directory with all content right? The feature is there!

@angel_infante:disqus You already can specify ad’s based on user level. If you have 2 levels, free and paid, you create 2 ad campaigns and limit each to a user level. Then you put the ad’s on the site wherever you want.

You are welcome Matt, basically with the evolution of smartphones, native apps are getting more intuitive to keep up with this fast growth. If you look at the capabilities of a typical smartphone app like for instance the New Facebook Messenger or even WhatsApp, one can attach video, audio and even files making them more preferred to the contemporary short messaging service utility available as a default on mobile phones.
