SocialEngine PHP 4.7 released – bug fixes & improvements

Good news everyone! We’ve released a significant update to SocialEngine PHP that includes an array of bug fixes and many other improvements. Here’s a partial list:

  • Upgraded TinyMCE from v3 to v4
  • Added support for HTML5 notifications for chat messages (all major browsers)
  • Fixed some broken translation phrases
  • Optimized image files and other static assets for faster loading
  • Fixed the quote button on the Group plugin
  • Fixed the number of entries allowed for in the Blog plugin member settings
  • Fixed a variety of bugs that were causing fatal errors for installations running on PHP 5.4+ in strict mode.
  • Fixed a problem with people not showing up in members’ buddy lists within the Chat plugin
  • Now lazy-loading some Javascript files to increase page load speed
  • Minified and consolidated Javascript files to increase page load speed
  • Improved compatibility for link previews in feed posts

SocialEngine clients can grab the new SE PHP 4.7 code from the client area. Remember to make a *complete* backup of your installation before performing an upgrade. If you’ve made significant custom changes to your source code, remember that they could pose problems during the upgrade process, so enlist a developer to help you if you’re not comfortable with the process yourself.

We have many more SE PHP improvements coming in the pipeline and will be returning to a regular (and more frequent) release schedule. I’ll follow up with another blog entry detailing the next round of improvements and new features to come to SE PHP.

Happy community building!

Thank you hope is true what you are saying about speed improve even if its hard to believe … is hard to believe because the slow loading of SE has become a big business for some company’s that are saying “buy improved hosting from us to have maximum speed from your SE script” …so is coming the next question : why to improve speed when when company’s are earning money from slow loading ?

Searches on custom profile fields have never worked for my site. Is this a known issue?

This isn’t a known issue that we are aware of. Could you email me at sales@socialEngine.com and we will investigate.

One thing I have found is when someone attempts to upload an image greater than 3000×3000 pixels in 72dpi they get an error message instead of a dialog box explaining that the image has to be smaller. I tried it and have confirmed that is you upload one just smaller than that size all is well, larger you get the error message. Any feedback on this?

AMAZING job guys. Actually – I’m just kidding. This is the worst upgrade I’ve ever seen from you. Never before have I had a problem that actually killed the site. But with your tinymce upgrade – now NO COMMENT BOXES show up at all on the site. No one can create a new blog, no one can edit one. It’s amazing.

Oh and forget about speed increases. The homepage which has consistently for months taken 6 seconds to load, now takes 8 seconds.

TinyMCE 4.0 features was not added fully and also you miss upload photos from computer and H Tags in blog and other places try to add them in features updates and if you have time try to follow SEO basics in your script…

I thought the upgraded tinyMCE would solve a couple of problems. Seems the opposite is true. I wonder if for reporting the various problems I have to buy an extended support package 😉
Guys seriously, you have a nice product in general and due to an outdated editor you hurt yourself…
To insert links is missing, to upload images I need to buy MoxieManager for $79 ? 😉 or to install open source plupload? Why this additional work and money? :-(

Thank you for reply … i think some time we will like not to have updates about options but have updates about speeding improvement … most of SE websites are loosing users because of the bad loading speed !

Until this problem with tinymce will be fixed, for those that are happy with this upgrade and want to keep it , just replace the tinymce folder in /externals/ with an old tinymce from previous 4.x.x versions of SEphp…that solved the problem for me.

hi gabry, thanks for the hint. I asked my serverguys about this option. they dont recommend it. but at least they were able to add option to link words/phrases.
You dont experience any probs with the old tinyMCE version and the new SE 4.7?

no, it fails via url and url only for sourcing pics for blogs is unacceptable, not to mention and archaic step backwards

i have to say long wait for social engine since day 1 i always though that social engine will be the best script ever and now im very disappoint with upgrades they come up with even so thinks they say r not even close……. and also most of the plugins they create have lot bugs and plugins r not even worth to buy to actually do something with it cuz u can’t really do much. and don’t get me wrong i have search online many other scripts come out may not have what social engine has but as of today those scripts are more comparable to today’s generation. so my suggestion to social engine that you should fix all bugs and updates that needs and also plugins you already have little upgrade. like everyone ask for…………instedd of making new thinks for your self…..

i hope everyone agree with me???

Can I kindly ask that SE dedicates the next development cycle to sort out the home page and member page load times that seem to be affecting so many of us. I am sticking to this platform as I really like everything else about it but these performance issues are really starting to damage my community.

Do you sometimes think upgrading breaks the current site, as a new install would work better? I have things that stop working here and there.. but yet the new core install works.

Hi am 69 years old i have had SE for 2 years and i get on OK with it. Your crashes r do to your server and not SE. And the more you put on a page the slower it loads.
I do not like to hear SE run down when it is not needed.

David that comment was last year before they switched owners and SE became awesome. It really was crappy before. The new guys fixed it up and made it awesome. Same server, new SE, no crashes.
