SocialEngine PHP version 4.8.9 is here!

4.8.9 image

We’re pleased to announce that the highly anticipated SocialEngine PHP 4.8.9 is released! We’ve made many important changes, including a fix for the issues caused by Facebook and YouTube API updates. If you’ve been waiting for a better import tool to migrate your website from Ning to SocialEngine PHP, the time is now! We’ve updated our Ning importer and now it’s better than ever.

Where to get the update: You can download this latest version of SocialEngine PHP from your client area.

Caution! Please be sure to do a complete backup of your files and your database before upgrading to 4.8.9. If you’re not comfortable doing the backup and installation yourself, we’d be happy to help you out! Simply go to the client store and purchase the upgrade service, and we’ll take care of it.

Changes: Below is a list of all the fixes included in 4.8.9:

  • Fixed compatibility issue in Videos that appeared because of YouTube depreciating their API v2 and switching to v3. Note: After upgrading your website to 4.8.9, you will need to enter a new API key for Google Services, accessible in the Admin > Plugins > Videos > Global Settings section of your site. To learn how to create that key with correct permissions, read our Configuring Admin Panel for YouTube Update article. Fixes #44
  • Fixed a compatibility issue with Facebook integration that appeared because of Facebook deprecating their “offline_access” permission. For more details, check out this article on the Facebook integration fix. Fixes #42
  • Updated our Ning importer tool, fixing multiple issues and enabling import of pages. Read our Ning Archiver Importer article for more details on this.
  • Fixed a log error that appeared when Albums section was being accessed by non-logged users.
  • Fixed issue with “Translation Performance” setting not getting saved in a few cases. Fixes #45
  • Fixed a javascript error appearing after Fancy Menu widget was placed on website.
  • Fixed an issue where empty Music Playlists were not being displayed in “Manage Playlists” section of administration.
  • Fixed issue where incorrect timezone was being displayed in the email that goes to site admin on every new signup.
  • Fixed the order of member names that was being displayed in pop-up clicking on or showing list of members’ name in alphabetical order for inviting to join group.
  • Fixed issue with “Name” field of signup form that was conflicting with another form’s Name field when existing on same page.
  • Fixed issue with newly registered members getting two emails: “Welcome email” and “Welcome email with Password”.
  • Fixed an issue where search engines were indexing the website in maintenance mode. Fixes #18
  • Fixed issue with search corresponding to custom profile question “Country” that was not working on “Manage Classifieds” page.
  • Fixed a javascript error that was appearing on a few multilingual websites on photo selection page during signup.
  • Fixed an issue where a few activity feeds on the “Member Home Page” sometimes appeared missing.
  • Fixed issue with “Allow Messaging” setting that was not working fine in mobile site.
  • Fixed issue with albums link that was redirecting to a “Page Not Found” message. This appears when a photo received in a message is viewed.
  • Fixed an issue where edited discussion posts in Events were displayed with HTML Tags. Fixes #48
  • Fixed issue where custom pages having hyphens (-) in their URLs were not working.
  • Increased the width of Layout Editor’s “Page Block Placement” area for better accessibility at admin panel.
  • Fixed an issue allowing multiple line breaks in comments. Fixes #40
  • Fixed an issue that caused photos to turn sideways when captured and uploaded from a few android and iOS devices.

Plugins: We’ve also upgraded Albums, Classifieds, Events, Groups, Mobile, Music and Videos plugins to 4.8.9.

Changelog: You can browse the complete changelog file for more details about the fixes implemented in this release.

    Hi Douglas,

You can see whats on the roadmap by accessing your cloud site and clicking on the “Product Roadmap” menu item on the bottom left.

  8. Posted June 24, 2015 at 2:34 am | Permalink

Do you mean the CLOUD ROADMAP at the bottom-middle ? Nothing too exciting there in terms of features. I’ve bought my own responsive themes already. Step by step is ok, but if people don’t get it, they probably shouldn’t be using it. I’m also only English, so customising that isn’t any use to me, and I thought we already had editing facilities. So, nothing on the horizon as far as I’m concerned.

  9. Posted June 24, 2015 at 10:43 am | Permalink

no, the link is in your cloud site’s admin. The link the footer is a bit outdated.

  10. Posted June 24, 2015 at 10:58 am | Permalink

Gotcha. Hadn’t noticed that. Much better but when I click on any of them to see more, it puts me back to my main site, instead of perhaps to explain that feature more ?

  11. Posted June 24, 2015 at 3:24 pm | Permalink

Thats super odd, I’ll let ramen know (they’re a service that enabled this)

  12. Posted June 24, 2015 at 4:55 pm | Permalink

Douglas, it should now be fixed and you can interact and learn more about each proposed feature.

Hello Doug! You can now upgrade all the SocialEngineAddOns plugins on your website to their latest versions as these are now compatible with SocialEngine 4.8.9:

  15. Posted June 27, 2015 at 2:07 am | Permalink

Okay so I’m still not able to upgrade. I wasn’t able to upgrade even when the last rollout happened.

    Currently on version Version4.8.7.

After I upload the tar file, it goes on to 100% and then just sits there doing nothing. Here’s a screengrab :

Hi, it would have happened due to some browser or caching issues. If you’re having such issues with upgrading SocialEngine then you may just follow below steps:
    1. Upload socialengine4.8.9.tar to “/temporary/package/archives” folder via FTP.
    2. Then, go back to Admin => Manages Plugins Section and click on the “Install Packages” link where you’ll find that package extracted.

You may then proceed further with the upgrade as usual. Hope that helps.

I just recently uploaded the new 4.8.9 SE and noticed that in my main feed non of the share functions are working such as “Add photo, Add Link, Add Music” – is anyone else having this issue? – Thanks for fixing the youtube API issue. :)

He it’s a great update, but would request 2 feature:
    – How to limit maximum file size which can be uploaded: Please restrict to upto 25 MB for Video, Photo, or Music or Any file.
    – Also option to limit maximum limit the data per user for eg 500 MB per user for all file types.

Hi Keshav, there is a php variable “upload_max_filesize” that determines the maximum file size allowed to be uploaded on website. So, you can accordingly set this value editing your php.ini file or get your hosting provider to help you with this change.
To limit the maximum data that a user can upload on site, we’ve already provided a “Storage Quota” setting in Member Level Settings. For more details, please check this KB article:—manage->-member-levels

Hi Mike, This is not a known issue in this upgrade. You may check our demo website as well : and see that these links are working fine. Please try clearing your browser’s cache or check using some other browser and if you still face the same problem, please file a support ticket to let our team look deeper into this issue on your particular installation. Thanks

Are there any plugins that can notify networks? So a user posts something and the all members in a network get notified. I want to connect my golfers in a simpler way using the activity feed. So for example a golfer wants to play golf and they are a NJ Member a notifications goes to all other members with the NJ Network? Any help is appreciated!

Great that worked. Will I have to do it everytime on to upgrade to latest se version?

I would really like to upgrade it without having to navigate to the ftp folder everytime.

  24. Posted July 15, 2015 at 12:09 pm | Permalink

Yes, for now you will need to do that for every upgrade. We have some items in our roadmap to make that process easier in the future.

Please make sure that after uploading the .tar file via FTP, you’ve set Recursive 777 permission on “/temporary/” directory. Hope that helps!

Is there a noticeable speed load enhancement or difference with 4.8.9 compared to 4.8.7 or 4.8.6?? I still have 4.8.6 version because i kinda given up on SocialEngine…… is so slow!! They need to renew their platform to be speedy loads from the beginning or else it will all go to waste. What are the solutions by developers in here how they made their socialengine faster?? Thanks.

Hi Jay, while we’ve not done any speed related enhancements in 4.8.9, we still suggest you to upgrade your site to latest version as it comes with multiple fixes.
As far as speed is concerned, there are many small tweaks that can boost your website’s performance once implemented on your site and server. Read this article for details:

Apart from that, we also suggest you to enable Translation Performance checkbox from Admin > Settings > Performance & Caching section to increase your site’s speed. Hope that helps!

If you still face any issues, please file a support ticket to let our team look deeper into this issue on your particular installation. Thanks.
