4.9 Sneak Peek

SocialEngine 4.9 Sneak Peek

Hello! We’ve been burning the midnight oil getting things together for our exciting 4.9 release! As the pieces start to fall into their final places, we’d like to provide you with this Sneak Peek! Are you ready? We’ve got some great improvements and new features to bring your social networking community to a new level!

Below are just a few of the awesome new features and improvements coming. Some of these features had been planned for our 4.10 release but our wonderful development team was able to include the UI improvements in this 4.9 release!

New Insignia – Responsive Theme

Our new default responsive theme, Insignia, enables your users to easily browse content across multiple devices with varied screen sizes. This will be the default theme when you’ve installed a fresh copy of SocialEngine.

Awesome UI Improvements

We’ve improved the User Interface (UI) for a smoother, more refined experience. The numbered items below correspond to the numbers on the screenshot above.

  1. New header layout with the member’s photo in the mini menu.
  2. New footer layout with social share options.
  3. “Banner” feature. Admin will be able to add photos and text for each banner. These can be placed on any page and will show the image, text and a CTA button. Above, we show it  on the Browse Photo Albums page.. You can see the text centered in the banner and the CTA button “Upload Photos” in the lower right corner.
  4. Enhanced UI for all of the browse pages of core modules. The above screenshot shows the Browse Albums page.  We’ve implemented this for all of the other core modules including: Members, Videos, Classifieds, Blogs, Music, Events, and Groups.
  5. Added a Search button in search widgets for better UX.
  6. Added a categories widget for all of the core modules for better UX and navigation. Our screenshot above shows it for the Photo Albums.

New Toggle Between Vertical and Horizontal Menus

We’ve added a setting for Admin to allow toggling between either vertical or horizontal menus. This gives you greater flexibility in website customization. Here’s how the vertical menus look, in both the “open” and “closed” views.

Upload Multiple Photos in Activity Feed

This new feature allows your members to upload multiple photos with their Activity Feed “Post something.” When your member wants to post a status, they can now choose to include multiple images with it. This can help to create more activity on your site as members do love to share their photos!

Member Home Page Multiple Photos

reCAPTCHA Updated to Google’s No CAPTCHA reCAPTCHA

Spammers beware! You’re SocialEngine 4.9 website comes with an update to the reCAPTCHA anti-spam protection. Very easy for you to use, much harder for spammers to infiltrate.

Insignia Google reCAPTCHA

Zend Framework Updated to latest ZF1

We’ve updated our Zend Framework to the latest ZF1 which allows us to support PHP 7 and PHP 7.1! This is great for everyone that wants to use PHP 7 for their communities.

SEO friendly content URLs with Slugs

Improving your SEO experience can help you place better in the search engines. We’ve added SEO friendly content URLs with Slugs for Albums, Groups, and Events. This will change your URLs from this, http://xyz.com/group/1 , to be like this, http://xyz.com/group/test-group , where “test-group” is the name of the group that was created.

Be sure to stay tuned for further announcements so you can grab version 4.9 when it releases! Don’t have a license yet? No need to wait to get started as upgrading to new releases is easy peasy, point and click simple. You can start your community today with our 4.8.13 and then upgrade later on without concern. Hi Troy,

Thanks for your feedback. Glad you like the looks. :) Yes, we mentioned in the blog that this was just a brief peek. Please see the roadmap linked to see some of the rest of the features coming. We just didn’t want a huge blog to show everything coming this time since we had the roadmap before. Lots of goodies are coming though. Stay tuned. :)

Nice work. Flash uploader is dead or is included again in this version?

    • Posted January 9, 2017 at 9:19 am | Permalink

Thank you! Yes, flash uploader is included in this version.

        Posted January 9, 2017 at 11:51 am | Permalink

Flash is dead, why use it? From the 4.9 roadmap passed a year and half, more than enough to get rid of flash uploader and replace it with any html5 uploader.

        • Posted January 13, 2017 at 8:07 am | Permalink

Flash falls back to a basic uploader if it’s not available for use. We are looking at adding more html5 uploader capabilities in future versions. We already support html5 video uploader though.

I wish you would replace the Flash uploader with HTML5. I don’t even have Flash installed as no websites require it now. I can upload single photo to activity feed without Flash, but with the new “Upload multiple photos” feature I guess that option will go away.

        • Posted January 13, 2017 at 8:08 am | Permalink

If not using flash, the uploader defaults back to a basic uploader. I’ve tested this and we have a bug that is being fixed for 4.9 release that wasn’t showing the basic uploader button. Hopefully, that will resolve your question until we can add HTML5 upload support for future versions. Noting that we already support HTML5 upload for videos.

We do have search improvements coming. If you find it doesn’t do what you need, please feel free to submit a feature request to our Github as it is too late to add new features to 4.9 at this time.

Any ideas if this includes a fix for blocking?

    • Posted January 13, 2017 at 8:05 am | Permalink

Is there a bug with blocking that you are referring to? I am not aware of a bug but if you can let us know what you are referring to, we can check. Thank you!

I have no clue why my previous post didn’t go though…

Yes I would assume its a bug, blocking hasn’t worked since I got SE, if user A blocks User b, User b can still fully comment on all of users A’s stuff

I’m just curious if this has been resolved in 4.9 as my community has been complaining about this problem and its the community’s biggest complaint.

Will the responsive theme replace the Mobile Template? Is this the direction? I hope so because managing 2 sets of interface is intensive.

    • Posted January 19, 2017 at 7:47 am | Permalink

      Hi Florin,

Thank you for posting. It won’t replace the Mobile Template but you could disable the mobile plugin and use the site in full mode as it would be a responsive theme so it would show properly on various screen sizes.

Will this update come with REST API updates too?

    • Posted January 19, 2017 at 7:48 am | Permalink

This version doesn’t have REST API updates.

    • Posted January 20, 2017 at 7:54 am | Permalink

Hello and welcome to SocialEngine! :)

We are working on getting it finished. We don’t have a date for stable release but it shouldn’t be too much longer until we post more details.

I hope someday soon you will allow admin to resend verification emails

    • Posted January 20, 2017 at 8:03 am | Permalink

I see the feature request is in our Github, https://github.com/SocialEngine/phpv4-issues/issues/342 . Please feel free to comment in there so our core developers can see there is interest. It sounds like a good feature that might get more interest if you also post at our community (linked in the Github) and get other clients to comment on it.

Hi Donna, I have already previously commented on this post. This post is from 2015 so it doesn’t look like anything is going to be done about it. I have 118 members not verified because the server emails was going to spam and I did not realise. The issue is fixed but I have no way to resend verification emails. Its really frustrating as its allot of members that can be using my site. If you have a look on that comment thread I commented on May 16 2016 . If this is something your team could do soon in the next upgrade I would greatly appreciate it.

        Thank you

          Hi Jackie,

I don’t see a Jackie in that post. Perhaps you used a different user name at Github? I have asked the team about the possibility to add this to a future version. Our 4.9 is already in final testing/fixing so it would need to be after this release that is coming soon.

Thank you for posting and for reminding us of this feature. :)

Is there any release date available? I need some custom development but i wait now for new version. But if it takes more then 3 months then i must think different.
So is it days, weeks or months can you say that?

    • Posted January 30, 2017 at 7:56 am | Permalink

      Hi Marco,

Thank you for posting. We don’t have an exact date yet as we need to do Beta testing first. We prefer to test well, before releasing a final version, so that clients don’t have issues with their sites upgrading. If Beta and other testing goes fine, we don’t anticipate it taking more than three months until stable. It all depends on how testing goes.

          Hello Stepan,

We won’t be having a public beta but we will let everyone know when there will be something available for clients. :) Be sure to stay tuned to our blogs and our community for updates as we release them.

ok! first its a good news something is coming. second based on what i see here not so happy about it. bc i expected lil more than just fix to the new upgrade. i have notice many problems and not only the problems but also it’s not up to date as it is many other platform. i’m not just a customer, i’m a big fan of se who has been been watching se ever since came out and the only think i see minor change which only they see the problem that need to be fix. i have list of problems that i know many doesn’t know. so my concern if se will make this changes this time with this update and make my time worth well. and hope my expectation is become true.

      Hello Mohsin,

Thank you for responding and posting your concerns. It would be much easier to discuss your concerns either at our https://community.onsocialengine.com community, where it’s easier to reply or in a ticket to support so we can address whatever issues you might be speaking of.

Regarding issues, we have a very long list of bug fixes and improvements that we’ve made to 4.9. It’s not a minor release. This is a major version release that added a lot of things and fixed a lot of things posted at our Github issue tracker. https://github.com/socialengine/phpv4-issues/issues

If you have issues, please do check our Github to see if they were raised already. If they were not, please put one issue per report in our Github. It is much easier for us to check things and fix them if an issue report only has one item in it.
