How to Make Your SocialEngine Community a Breeze to Use

SE-BreezeBlog

Welcome back to our blog! This month, we’ll focus on How to Make Your SocialEngine Community a Breeze to Use. This is an important topic as first impressions are critical for the success of your community. It’s also crucial to keep your site user friendly in order to keep your members coming back. Read below for some helpful tips!

Why is it important to keep site navigation and features easy for members to use?

According to Netcraft there are over 100 million active websites. Even if your website is competing with just 1% of those, that’s about 10,000 websites in competition with your site for members. As such, your site needs to be set up with features to attract and retain members. One of the main reasons members leave a site is frustration over usability. If they can’t quickly figure out how to manage their account, privacy, friends, and how to post content they’ll give up. Today’s community user is well aware that there are many other community choices and will gravitate toward those that are the easiest to use.

How do I add features and still maintain an easy to use website?

With a new site, you may think you need to add a lot of features to it in order to attract members. Actually, it’s the opposite! A good thing to shoot for when you start your community is to only include features that are necessary for the community.. This allows you to focus on having  a website that is fast, easy to navigate, and easy to participate in. You may also want to customize the look with colors and fonts that work better for your niche or match your business. Just remember to choose colors and fonts that are easy to read and don’t cause eye burn.

Once you have a fair amount of members and content, new features can be introduced slowly and deliberately. We suggest introducing one feature at a time. This allows your members to learn how to use this new toy and also allows you to show your members that you have plans for improvements.

You’ll still want to limit how many features you add as it can start to get “crowded,” “too busy,” and even impact site loading speeds. Any noticeable difference in site loading will cause your members to grumble and even leave. Always test on your development site to see the impact in performance and usability before implementing on the live site.

What can I do to make my site easy for members to use?

The most valuable tool for your members to learn your platform is a robust and well written knowledgebase. A knowledgebase filled with easy to follow tutorials will provide all members with a single location for any answers they need.. When there’s time, also consider doing video tutorials as many members learn better when they can see it in action. You can use our built in Forums plugin to build your knowledgebase or even utilize blog posts or simple article posts. Using hashtags and categories for tutorials will help your members find them easier as well. Make sure you have a way for members to request tutorials or to ask questions. Then, follow up with answers as this is an invaluable resource for you to see what tutorials are needed.

There are some certified plugins that can help make your site easier for members to use as well.

Those are just a few of the plugins we found to make things easier for members. Feel free to browse the certified marketplace for any others that might suit your site. We hope you’ve found this article helpful! Feel free to post feedback or request more articles at our community. Hope to see you there!!

SocialEngine GDPR Compliance Updates

bg

Hello,

In accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) we are happy to inform everyone that we have updated our Privacy Policy and operational procedures. These changes involve the following:

  • Updated the Privacy Policy to comply with GDPR requirements. Clients are encouraged to check the new Privacy Policy and log in to their account at socialengine.com/login to accept the new policies.
  • Updated the sign up form at socialengine.com to add opt-in, in compliance with GDPR requirements.
  • Updated marketplace terms regarding certified plugins.
  • Removed Webhooks from certified plugins in order to conform to GDPR requirements regarding user data. For those experts using the webhooks, you’ll need to check the Order Statistics page to view the Order ID, purchase date, item purchased and amount. Clients may need to provide the Order ID when contacting experts for help with their purchased products but experts may also ask you for the date purchased. Your Order ID can be found in your client dashboard where the certified plugins are listed.

There are no changes to our SocialEngine PHP or SocialEngine Cloud products at this time. Clients and experts will want to check the GDPR requirements and prepare their own sites in order to comply with them. There are also some certified plugins for SocialEngine PHP to help with GDPR compliance for those that need them.

If you have any questions about our policies, please feel free to contact us at support@socialengine.coml. If you have questions about how to proceed with changes to your SocialEngine website, please feel free to post at our community. There are already several threads with great tips!

With Appreciation,

SocialEngine Reseller Account Migration

bg

Recently we have announced the suspension of the SocialEngine reseller program due to a large number of complaints that end users were not receiving the support they were entitled to by their resellers. At SocialEngine we want to offer the best customer experience to everyone using our platform, so in order to do so we are voluntarily making an exception to our terms and we are offering an amnesty for the month of April, 2018. This would mean that all clients who have purchased from a reseller will be given the opportunity to have their own account and purchase items/services from our client store.

This amnesty will consist of a considerable discount  for you to “buy in” to move the license into your own account. This will allow you access to the marketplace, support (if purchased) and other SocialEngine services that you may not have access to as a reseller client.

The price to have your license transferred into your own account will be $50. For those with a license and SocialEngine official plugins, the price will be $100. This transfer is permanent and cannot be resold or re-transferred and is a one time process.

In order to take advantage of this one time offer, you’ll need to send a request to our support via our contact form and request the Reseller Amnesty discount in the subject line.

Details we need:

  • Your current license ID
  • Email used to purchase
  • Date of purchase
  • SocialEngine Official plugins purchased from reseller if any
  • Reseller purchased from

Unfortunately purchases from non-authorized resellers would not qualify for this program, however, if you’d like you can contact us for information on how we can help get you moved over into an account of your own!

With Appreciation,
The SocialEngine Team

SocialEngine Maintenance Release

SocialEngine Maintenance Release

We are releasing a small fix for the Photo Albums plugin and Tag feature. This fix addresses an issue with a “tag_count” error with hashtags and username tags on photos. To get this fix, please log in to your client dashboard and download v4.10.3p1 and the Photo Albums plugin and upgrade via the normal upgrade routine.

Changelog:

  • application/modules/Core/Model/DbTable/Tags.php
  • externals/tagger/tagger.js
  • application/modules/Album/views/scripts/photo/view.tpl

As always we highly encourage all users to do a complete backup of both files and database before performing this upgrade. Please have the backup performed by your host or a developer if you’re not comfortable with performing it yourself. Always check with third party experts for compatibility with any products you use before upgrading.

Important: If you are on version 4.9.4p1 or below, you will need to follow the special steps in the upgrading documents before upgrading and apply the patch mentioned.

If you find any issues, please let us know by filing a bug report in our Bug Tracker. We’d like to encourage you to stay connected with the community.

With Great Appreciation,
The SocialEngine Team

Spencer’s Digs: Musical Bundle

SE-MusicBundle-468x60-2x

Howdy everyone! Did ya miss me? I missed all of you!! I’ve been busy helping the team with spring cleaning. When I saw them moving the furniture around, I figured I would give them a paw. I got all of the furniture out of the other rooms and buried it in the backyard! They were so happy too. :) Almost as happy as when I cleaned out the refrigerator last month – that stuff was so yummy!
